Suits the Stars

"With fashion, the turnaround time seems to be getting faster - 15 minutes of fame has turned into five.'' Zac Posen.

Contemporary fashion designer Zac Posen began to create his distinguished aesthetic at London's design school Central Saint Martins. In the early 2000's, he was under the spotlight when his designs were worn by such Hollywood starlets as Natalie Portman, Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltrow and Claire Danes. And in 2006, at the Academy Awards, Best Actress nominee Felicity Huffman wore his gown to the prestigious ceremony.

The young, talented New York fashion designer, who is backed by rap tycoon Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, recently designed an outfit for Def Jam singer Rihanna for the annual Fashion Rocks Charity Extravaganza, held in New York on September 7, 2006. For his latest collection, Posen will soon launch a new collection with a Turkish luxury goods company, Vakko. He has also designed jeans for cult label 7 For All Mankind.

Zac and Diddy

"This is the beginning of my career, and I'm in it to last. I'm interested in building a business." Zac Posen.

At the tender young age of 16, Zac Posen had built his path to success. The aspiring fashion designer interned for Richard Martin at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute and enrolled in the Parson's School of Design pre-college program. Four years later, he interned at Nicole Miller, and the next year, he landed his first formal design assistant position at Tocca New York City.

In 2002, Posen broke the fashion scene with his Spring-Summer show at Gen Art's Fresh Faces in Fashion. His debut catwalk show drew further critical acclaim and several awards.

After his breakthrough, Posen went to dress a number of celebrities, and his muse is his best friend and Hollywood starlet Natalie Portman, with whom he appeared on the red carpet at some fashionable events, including the VH1/ Vogue Fashion Awards. He also suits supermodels and socialites, as well as a number of screen beauties, including Claire Danes, Liv Tyler, Kyra Sedgewick, Milla Jovovich, Halle Berry, Gywneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Angelina Jolie. Aging fashion wunderkind Calvin Klein also sang his praises to Posen, describing the young fashion designer as the next best thing.

Posen currently employs a staff of 30 women and three men in his Tribeca studio. Posen trust his mother, Susan, to take most of the business decisions and handle his corporation. Susan said: "The Silicon Valley boom years quickly faded with bad management. I do not want that for Zachary."

In 2005, many major stores were carrying Posenís collections. And at the 2006 Academy Awards, Best Actress nominee Felicity Huffman wore his gown to the prestigious ceremony.

Recently, Posen collaborated with Nokia to create an exclusive edition of wireless products for discriminating fashion mavens everywhere. Their first join-product was an exclusive edition Nokia 7200 phone enhanced with design elements from Posenís Fall/Winter 2004 "Blixen" Collection.

"Nokia always brings great designs to its phones, and it is an honor to add fashion to an already elegant phone - the Nokia 7200 handset. I designed the Fall/Winter 2004 Collection for the urban hip, the very kind of person who will see this exclusive edition Nokia phone as a must-have." Zac Posen (on teaming up with mobile phone company Nokia).

Posen also partnered with hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, who also owns the clothing lines Sean John and Sean by Sean Combs. They announced this past Spring that the rapper had invested an undisclosed amount of money to support the New York designerís business. Todd Kahn, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Sean John, Combs' fashion company, explained: "The initial attraction was a very personal attraction. Sean saw in Zac the characteristics he saw in himself: an amazing talent and the ability to set the world on fire.Ē

On Posenís side, he commented: ďSean understood my vision like no one else did and knows branding on a very sophisticated level. And he's a dreamer, like me."

Posen will soon receive Paris accolade, thanks to Paris- based vintage-clothes expert and historian Didier Ludot who will display his work in his Palais Royal stores during Paris Fashion Week. Ludot has focused on the grand Paris couturiers Christian Dior and Cristobal Balenciaga in the past.

As for his latest collection, Posen will launch a new collection with luxury goods company Vakko, a Turkish company which launches on September 29 in Istanbul. He has also designed jeans for cult label 7 For All Mankind. More recently, Posen designed an outfit for Barbados-born singer Rihanna for the annual Fashion Rocks Charity Extravaganza held in New York on September 7, 2006.
