American actress Vanessa Marano is known for her roles on television series such as “Without a Trace” (2002-2009), “The Comeback” (2005), “Gilmore Girls” (2005-2007), “The Young and the Restless” (2008-2010), “Trust Me” (2009) and “Scoundrels” (2010). She is now starring as Bay Kennish on the ABC Family series “Switched at Birth” (2011-?), from which she has collected two Teen Choice nominations.    


Childhood and Family:

Vanessa Marano was born Vanessa Nicole Marano on October 31, 1992, in Los Angeles, California. Her father is of Italian lineage. Her mother, Ellen, is the owner of Agoura Children's Theatre. Her younger sister, Laura, is a star on Disney Channel's “Austin & Ally.” Vanessa  is attending a community college.

The Young and the Restless


Vanessa Marano made her professional acting debut at age 7. After landing an agent, she began working for productions at the Stage Door Theater. In 2002, Marano got her first major television role on the CBS police procedural series “Without a Trace” where she played the role of Jack Malone's older daughter, Hanna. She irregularly appeared on the show until 2009 when it was canceled after a seven season run. Marano's real sister, Laura, also appeared in the series as Hanna's sister, Kate.         

In 2003, Marano appeared as Little Jamie in “Easy,” a comedy film written and directed by Jane Weinstock and starring Marguerite Moreau. She then played Young Brooke Ellison on the award winning made for TV film “The Brooke Ellison Story” (2004), starring Lacey Chabert. Following a guest starring appearance in “Grounded for Life” (2004), Marano landed the regular role of Francesca Berman, Valerie's preteen stepdaughter, on the HBO mockumentary series “The Comeback” (2005), starring Lisa Kudrow. Still in 2005, she appeared as Tate Pasquese in two episodes of “Six Feet Under” and as Gina in an episode of “Malcolm in the Middle.” The same year, she also joined the cast of the comedy/drama series “Gilmore Girls” in the recurring role of April Nardini.   

From 2008 to 2010, Marano played the regular role of Eden Gerick on “The Young and the Restless,” a role originally portrayed by Erin Sanders, who was let go shortly after her debut because of  the negative response her portrayal received. She also guest starred in TV shows like “Miss Guided” (2008), “The Closer” (2008) and “Ghost Whisperer” (2008), and had supporting roles on the TV films “Hell on Earth” (2007) and “Man of Your Dreams” (2008). In 2009, Marano played a recurring role as Haley on the TNT short lived series “Trust Me” and as Rebecca Mitchel on Showtime's “Dexter.” She also played Samantha Combs on the family/comedy feature film “Dear Lemon Lima” (2009).

Marano portrayed the main role Hope West on the ABC comedy/drama series “Scoundrels,” which ran for a season from June 20 to August 15, 2010. She continued on making guest appearances on TV shows like “Past Life,” “Medium,” “Parenthood,” “Marry Me” (all 2010), “Private Practice,” “Love Bites,” “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” (all 2011) and “Grey's Anatomy” (2012). She was a narrator on “Boys Are Stupid, Girls Are Mean” from 2012 to 2013. She portrayed Samantha in the comedy film “The Secret Lives of Dorks” (2013).  

Currently, Marano stars as Bay Kennish, a teenage girl living in the affluent Kansas City suburb of Mission Hills, Kansas with her mother Kathryn (played by Lea Thompson), father John, a former Kansas City Royals baseball player (played by D. W. Moffett), and slightly older brother Toby (played by Lucas Grabeel) on the family drama “Switched at Birth.” The series premiered on ABC Family on June 6, 2011. Marano was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer TV Star: Female in 2011 and then for Choice TV Actress: Drama in 2013 for her work on the series.

On August 13, 2014,  ABC Family renewed “Switched at Birth” for a fourth season which is scheduled to premiere in early 2015.      

Marano starred with Sterling Beaumon and Kyle Massey on the comedy movie “Senior Project,” which was released in Hong Kong in June 2014.
