She has a younger brother named Sam. Taylor attended Wayland High School, but graduated from West Roxbury High School in 2002. In 2006, she received Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University. She went on to enter the graduate program at New York University to continue her acting studies, but quit after her second year to start auditioning.

Taylor Schilling kicked off her screen career in 2007 when she was cast in the supporting role of Jackie in “Dark Matter,” the first feature film by opera director Chen Shi-zheng, and starring Liu Ye, Aidan Quinn and Meryl Streep.

Schilling next starred as Nurse Veronica Agnes Flanagan Callahan on the NBC medical drama “Mercy,” opposite co-stars Michelle Trachtenberg, Jaime Lee Kirchner, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Díaz and James LeGros. The show ran for one season on NBC from September 23, 2009 to May 12, 2010, and was renewed for a second season due to low ratings.

In 2011, Schilling starred as Dagny Taggart on the film adaptation of part of Ayn Rand's 1957 novel “Atlas Shrugged” called “Atlas Shrugged: Part I,” directed by Paul Johansson. The film was a flop and received negative reviews from critics.

In 2012, Schilling was cast as Beth Green in “The Lucky One,” adapted from the 2008 novel of the same name written by Nicholas Sparks. For her work on the film, she received Teen Choice nominations for Choice Movie Actress: Romance and Choice Movie Liplock, the latter of which she shared with co-star Zac Efron.

Schilling's enjoyed further success when she landed the role of Piper Chapman on the television comedy/drama series “Orange Is the New Black,” based on the Piper Kerman memoir “Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison.” The show premiered on Netflix on July 11, 2013. For her work on the series, Schilling has won a Satellite for Best Actress in a Series, Comedy or Musical and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama both in 2014. “There's this pervasive myth that in order for a piece of entertainment to have a crossover audience of men and women, it has to be a predominantly male film. I think this is showing people that women driving their own narrative, in a way that is complicated and dynamic and raw and vulnerable and real, is a hot commodity. People are really interested in that, interested in story and hungry for an authentic voice.” Taylor Schilling (on “Orange Is the New Black”)

Schilling also starred with Aidan Quinn and Michael Ironside in the Canadian-Irish drama film “Stay,”which premiered at the TIFF on September 11, 2013.

Schilling is set to star with Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman in the upcoming comedy film “The Overnight” (2014), directed and written by Patrick Brice.
