Actress and model Phoebe Tonkin first became famous in her native country Australia for portraying Cleo Sertori on the children television series “H2O: Just Add Water” (2006-2010), from which she also earned a nomination for Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama at the 2008  Australian Film  Institute Awards. In the United States, she is known for playing Faye Chamberlain on  “The Secret Circle” (2011-2012) and Hayley on “The Vampire Diaries” (2012-2013) and its spin off show, “The Originals” (2013-?). Tonkin also has appeared on the films “Tomorrow, When the War Began” (2010) and “Bait 3D” (2012).

Childhood and Family:

Phoebe Tonkin was born Phoebe Jane Elizabeth Tonkin on July 12, 1989, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. At  4, she took various dance classes such as hip hop, contemporary dance, classical ballet and tap dance. When she was 12, she started courses at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) at the Wharf Theatre. Phoebe later graduated from Queenwood School for Girls in Balmoral, New South Wales, where she acted in school plays like “Antigone,” “White Crane” and “Venetian Twins” and also took part in the school's Shakespeare festival and eventually won the 2005 state final in “A Midsummer Night's Dream.”  

H2O: Just Add Water


Phoebe Tonkin made her auspicious television debut in the Australian children series “H2O: Just Add Water,” which follows the lives of three teenage girls who turn into mermaids. The show ran for three seasons from July 7, 2006 to April 16, 2010. Playing Cleo Sertori, she was nominated for a 2008 Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award in the category of Best Lead Actress in a Television Drama for her performance.

In 2010, Tonkin landed her first film role on “Tomorrow, When the War Began,”an Australian action ensemble written and directed by Stuart Beattie and based on the novel of the same name (the first in a series of seven) by John Marsden. There she played the role of the rich and restive Fiona Maxwell.   

Apart from “H2O: Just Add Water,” Tonkin also appeared in other Australian television shows “Packed to the Rafters” (2009-2010; 3 episodes) and “Home and Away” (2010; 7 episodes).

In January 2011, Tonkin relocated to Los Angeles to pursue further opportunities. Within three months, she had landed a leading role on The CW supernatural drama series “The Secret Circle,” playing Faye Chamberlain. The show premiered on September 15, 2011 and ended later on May 10, 2012 after one season.     

Tonkin returned to the big screen when she was cast in the Australian-Singaporean 3D horror film “Bait 3D,” which was released in Australia on September 20, 2012. The film received mixed-negative reception.  

In October 2012, Tonkin made her first appearance on The CW television series “The Vampire Diaries,” starring  Nina Dobrev as the main protagonist, Elena Gilbert. She played the recurring role of Hayley Marshall in 8 episodes until April 2013.

Tonkin reprises her role as Hayley Marshall on “The Originals,” a spin-off of “The Vampire Diaries.” The show debuted on The CW on October 3, 2013.   

Tonkin will co-star with  Teresa Palmer, Rosario Dawson and Jaime King in the upcoming drama film “The Ever After” (2014), which was c-written by Palmer and Mark Webber (also directed). She also will star in the thriller film “Take Down” (2014), opposite Jeremy Sumpter.
