American actress and singer Lea Michele is famous for playing Rachel Berry on the Fox television smash hit “Glee” (2009-?). The role has brought her critical kudos as well as two Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination. Prior to her television success, Michele performed on Broadway productions such as “Les Misérables”, “Ragtime” and “Fiddler on the Roof”. She received a Drama Desk nomination for her performance as Wendla in “Spring Awakening” (2006-2008). Michele was ranked No. 7 on the FHM list of “100 Most Sexiest Women in the World of 2010” and was ranked No. 28 on Maxim magazine's “Hot 100 Women of 2011” list. She was named People Magazine's “Best Dressed List of 2010” and was included in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World of 2010.

Michele has actively participated in charities for gay rights and animal rights. She appeared in the PETA ad campaign “Buck Cruelty! Say No to Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides” in 2008 and also appeared in a PSA for PETA speaking out against fur clothing in 2010. In September 2010, she received an honor from PETA for her commitment for animals. Michele performed at the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in November 2009 and for True Colors Cabaret, a fundraiser in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality. She has also performed in several benefit concerts.          

Michele was romantically linked to Broadway actor Theo Stockman from September 2009 but first went public in May 2010 ) until they broke up in September 2011. In early 2012, Michele began dating her “Glee” co-star Cory Monteith. They remained a couple until the Canadian actor's death in July 2013.      


Childhood and Family:

Lea Michele Sarfati was born on August 29, 1986, in The Bronx, New York City, New York. She is the daughter of Marc Sarfati, a delicatessen owner, and Edith, a nurse. Her father is of Spanish Sephardic Jewish descent, while her mother is Italian American and Roman Catholic. Lea was raised in Tenafly, New Jersey, where she graduated from Tenafly High School, and later was accepted to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Instead of going to college, she chose to continue working on the stage.    

During high school, when she was not working on Broadway, Lea worked in a Bat Mitzvah dress shop where her duties were cleaning and vacuuming.

Spring Awakening


Lea Michele made her professional acting debut at age 9 in the original Broadway production of “Les Misérables” (1995), where she was hired as a replacement in the role of Young Cosette. She followed it up with the role of Tateh's daughter, the Little Girl, in the 1998 original Broadway production of “Ragtime”. The same year, she landed her voice to the direct to video animated featurette
“Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night”, which starred the voices of Phil Hartman (in one of his final roles), Jim Cummings, Marie Osmond and Tom Arnold. Her first television role was as Sammi in an episode of NBC's “Third Watch” called “Spring Forward, Fall Back” in 2000.

During her senior year of high school, in 2004, Michele was cast as Shprintze and Chava in the Broadway revival of the musical “Fiddler on the Roof”. She also sang on the 2004 Broadway revival cast recording of “Fiddler on the Roof”.     

Michele landed the role of Wendla in Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's musical version of “Spring Awakening” when she was 14. She played the role in early workshops and Off-Broadway before eventually originating the role in the Broadway production in December 2006 at age 20. In 2007, she was nominated for a Drama Desk in the category of Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her performance. Along with co-star and good friend, Jonathan Groff, she also shared a Audience Choice Award for Favorite Onstage Pair.  After two year stint, the two decided to leave the show to chase other opportunities.

Michele's big breakthrough arrived in 2009 when she gained the lead role of Rachel Berry in the popular Fox musical comedy/drama series “Glee,” which premiered on May 19, 2009. Apart from worldwide critical and public acclaim, the role also brought her several awards like the 2009 Satellite Award for Best Actress in a Series, Comedy or Musical, the 2010 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, the 2012 Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Actress: Comedy,  and the 2013 People's Choice Awards for Favorite TV Comedy Actress and Favorite Comedic TV Actress. She also was nominated for Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy in 2010 and 2011 and a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2010, among other nominations.  

Since her “Glee” success, Michele has done various projects, such as becoming the spokesperson for Dove commercials (2010), Nike workout application (2011), L'Oreal Paris and Candies (both 2012) as well as appearing in commercials for HP TouchPad and Chevrolet. She also played the role of aspiring singer Elise in the 2011 Garry Marshall romance/comedy film “New Year's Eve”, for which she netted a Teen Choice nomination in the category of Choice Movie: Female Scene Stealer.

Michele is the voice of Dorothy Gale in the 3D computer-animated musical film “Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return”, which is based on the “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, and “Dorothy of Oz” by his great-grandson, Roger Stanton Baum. The film is slated to be released in  theaters in the U.S. and Canada on May 9, 2014.
