The Social Network

“I felt so much when I was fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, I felt everything. I didn't understand (myself), I was so happy yet so angry and sad. That was the point when I realized that I needed to tell stories and make characters come alive and I needed to make people cry, and make people angry, and make people happy, and make them laugh”. Dakota Johnson (on why she chose to be an actress)

American fashion model and actress Dakota Johnson is known for playing roles in the films “The Social Network” (2010), from which she jointly netted a Phoenix Film Critics Society Award, a Hollywood Film Festival Award and a Palm Springs International Film Festival Award, “Beastly” (2011), “21 Jump Street” (2012), “The Five-Year Engagement” (2012) as well as for starring in the short-lived Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate” (2012-2013). The daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith is set to appear in forthcoming movies like “Need for Speed” (2014), “Cymbeline” (2014) and the adaptation of “Fifty Shades of Grey”(2014).

In late 2007, Johnson spent a 30 day in rehab at the Visions Teen Treatment Center in Malibu for drug and alcohol addiction. She was named one of the 55 faces of the future in Nylon Magazine's Young Hollywood Issue (May 2010).

Dakota Mayi Johnson was born on October 4, 1989, in Austin, Texas. She is the daughter of  actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. Her maternal grandfather is advertising executive and former child actor Peter Griffith (deceased) and actress Tippi Hedren. Her aunt is actress Tracy Griffith. Dakota is the stepdaughter of actor Antonio Banderas. She has two maternal half-siblings: Stella Banderas and Alexander Bauer (born 1985), and four paternal half-siblings: Jesse Johnson, Grace (born  1999), Jasper (born 2002) and Deacon Johnson (born 2006).

As a youngster, Dakota was a devouring dancer. She turned her attention to modeling at age 12 after joining other celebrities' children in a photo shoot for Teen Vogue. Dakota was educated at Aspen Community School in Aspen, Colorado.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Dakota Johnson made her big screen debut at age 10 when she and her half sister, Stella Banderas, portrayed daughters to their real life mother, Melanie Griffith, in “Crazy in Alabama” (1999). Directed by her stepfather, Antonio Banderas, the comedy/drama received mixed reviews and was a flop at the box office.

In 2006, Johnson was chosen Miss Golden Globe, where she served as the first second-generation Miss Golden Globe in the Globes' history. The same year, she signed with IMG Models. Three years later, she modeled for MANGO brand's jeans line.

After graduating from high school, Johnson signed with William Morris Agency and launched her acting career. In 2010, she was cast as Amelia Ritter in the David Fincher acclaimed movie “The Social Network”,  which is about the founding of Facebook. The role brought her a Phoenix Film Critics Society for Best Ensemble Acting, a Hollywood Film Festival for Ensemble of the Year, a Palm Springs International Film Festival for Ensemble Cast Award and a Central Ohio Film Critics Association nomination for Best Ensemble. She also appeared in the video short “All That Glitters” (2010).

Johnson appeared as Sloan Hagen in the drama film “Beastly” (2011), which is loosely adapted from the Alex Flin novel of the same name. It was written and directed by Daniel Barnz and starred Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer.

Johnson next appeared in the low budget comedy film “Gay Dude” (2012), starring Nicholas Braun, Hunter Cope and Sarah Hyland, and appeared with Paul Dano in the drama film “For Ellen” (2012), which was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for Dramatic at the Sundance Film Festival. She also played Minnie in the coming of age film “Goats” (2012), which was directed by Christopher Neil and written by Mark Poirier. The same year, Johnson was cast as Fugazy in the feature film version of the 1987 hit television show, “21 Jump Street”, starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, and portrayed a hostess named Audrey in Nicholas Stoller's “The Five-Year Engagement”, starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt.

Still in 2012, Johnson made her television series debut as Kate Fox, a neurotic and clumsy yet solemn single mother who works as a bartender, in the Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate”, opposite Nat Faxon as Ben Fox, Kate's silly older brother who moves into her house. Despite receiving good reviews, the show was canceled by the network after a single season due to disappointing ratings.

In 2013, Johnson made a cameo appearance as one of the new hires on the finale of “The Office”. She has completed filming a leading role on “Theo” (2013), a comedy/drama film written and directed by Ezna Sands.

Johnson will co-star opposite Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, Dominic Cooper, Kid Cudi, Rami Malek and Michael Keaton in the upcoming action movie “Need for Speed”, which is scheduled to be released on March 14, 2014.  She also has been cast in the modern-day film adaptation of William Shakespeare's “Cymbeline” (2014), starring Ethan Hawke and Ed Harris in the leads.

On September 2, 2013, it was announced that Johnson would play Anastasia Steele in the upcoming movie of “Fifty Shades of Grey”, an adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name by E. L. James. The film is slated for August 1, 2014 release.
