200 Cigarettes

“I’m really tough on the inside. I have a cold, cold heart but I act like a really, really sweet guy. For real, I’m pretty sweet and everybody knows it. I don’t put up much of an act. When I do, it’s embarrassing because everybody’s on to me.” Casey Affleck

American actor and writer Casey Affleck is perhaps best-known for his portrayal of teen punk rocker Tom in the independent movie 200 Cigarettes (1999). Initially gaining attention as disaffected Russell Hines in Gus Van Sant’s To Die For (1995), Casey continued to impress audiences with roles in such films as Race the Sun (1996), Chasing Amy (1997), the highly-acclaimed Good Will Hunting (1997) and the indie film Desert Blue (1998). His more recent film credits include a costarring role opposite Heather Graham and Luke Wilson in Drowning Mona (2000), small roles in Hamlet (2000) and American Pie 2 (2001), a leading role in Attention Shoppers (2000), supporting parts in Ocean’s Eleven (2001) and Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and a title character in the drama-comedy Lonesome Jim (2005). Casey, with Damon, also co-wrote and co-starred in the unsuccessful Gerry (2002), which was directed by Gus Van Sant. 31-year-old Casey will soon appear in the upcoming The Last Kiss (2006) and star in the Western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2006).

As for his private life, 5’11” Casey became engaged to his lover of four years Summer Phoenix on January 9, 2004. He proposed to Phoenix over the Christmas holidays with a platinum and diamond ring of his own design. The couple welcomed their first child, son Indiana August, four months after the engagement, on May 31, 2004.

Falmouth’s Son

Childhood and Family:

A Falmouth, Massachusetts, native, Caleb Casey Affleck was born on August 12, 1975. His father, Tim Affleck, is from Scotland and worked at a number of jobs which included being a drug counselor, janitor, actor, auto mechanic and bartender, and his mother, Chris, is a school teacher of Irish descent. Following the divorce of his parents, Casey and his older brother, actor Ben Affleck (born on August 15, 1972), were raised under the custody of their single mother. Commenting about Ben on their teen days, Casey said,” He always stole all my clothes and socks, and that kind of left me with a sense of betrayal. “

Casey was educated at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and continued his studies at the Columbia University, in New York. During this time, Casey lived with his grandmother in Manhattan. Currently residing in New York City, Casey shares a home with his actress fiancé Summer Phoenix (born on December 10, 1978) and their son, Indiana August (born on May 31, 2004).

Of Scottish and Irish heritage, actor Casey Affleck soon followed in the footsteps of his older brother Ben and entered the showbiz industry at age 13. Casey received his first taste in front of the camera as Kevin Bacon’s half-brother in PBS’ American Playhouse production of Lemon Sky. Sporadically appearing on TV, Casey resurfaced two years later in his miniseries debut, “The Kennedys of Massachusetts” (1990), playing youthful Bobby Kennedy. It took almost seven years for Casey to make a jump start to the big screen (after his onscreen debut in 1988) when director Gus Van Sant cast him as Russell Hines in To Die For (1995, also starring Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon and Jaoquin Phoenix), a role that first gained Casey attention.

After the fine performance, Casey’s career began to take off. He won a costarring role in Race the Sun (1996), starring alongside Halle Berry. The following year saw Casey in Kevin Smith’s Chasing Amy, starring his brother Ben, and then in a more substantial role as a South Boston friend to Ben and Matt Damon in the Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, Good Will Hunting (1997), directed by Gus Van Sant. He next received a starring role, opposite Brendan Sexton III and Kate Hudson, in the indie film Desert Blue (1998).

At the end of decade, Casey gained popularity for playing juvenile punk rocker Tom in the independent movie 200 Cigarettes (1999). The Shana Larsen-scripted comedy also featured Ben Affleck as a bartender. Also in 1999, the young actor made a cameo as Tom Myers in American Pie and appeared in William Roth’s drama-romance Floating (1999).

2000 saw roles in Drowning Mona (2000), where Casey had to put on a blond wig and high-pitch his voice for the character Bobby Calzone, the Sundance-screened Committed (2000, costarred with Heather Graham and Luke Wilson), Hamlet (2000, starring Ethan Hawke) and the Philip Charles MacKenzie-directed Attention Shoppers (2000), starring alongside Lillian Adams. After reprising his cameo role of Tom Myers for American Pie 2 (2001), Casey found himself acting opposite Melissa Sagemiller and Wes Bentley in the horror-thriller Soul Survivors (2001). He was nominated for Best On-Screen Team at the MTV Movie Awards when Casey joined an all-star cast which included Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and old friend Matt Damon, for the remake of the Rat Pack caper comedy Ocean’s Eleven (2001).

In 2002, collaborating with Damon, Casey costarred and co-scripting the Sundance-screened Gerry, an experimental companion film about two backpackers who get lost in the desert without food or water, helmed by Gus Van Sant. The film, however, was unsuccessful. After taking a two-year hiatus, he made his way back to film by rejoining the rest of the original cast for the sequel Ocean’s Twelve (2004). Casey next teamed up with director Steve Buscemi to star with Liv Tyler and Mary Kay Place in the drama-comedy Lonesome Jim (2005). In 2006, Casey can add the Tony Goldwin-helmed comedy The Last Kiss (2006) and Andrew Dominik’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2006, also starring Dustin Bollinger and Zooey Deschanel) to his acting resume.
