Princess Diaries

"The multi-talented Hathaway is a combination Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland." Garry Marshall, The Princess Diaries (2001) director.

Rising star Anne Hathaway was hurled toward prominence after starring as Mia Thermopolis, a gawky teenager turned royalty, in the Disney's blockbuster comedy The Princess Diaries (2001, opposite Julie Andrews) and in its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. She also costarred with Christopher Gorham in The Other Side of Heaven (2001), with Charlie Hunnam in an adaptation of Charles Dickens novel, Nicholas Nickleby (2002) and played the title role in Ella Enchanted (2004), where she sang a duet with pop star Jesse McCartney.

First gaining attention while portraying Meghan Green in the Fox's drama series "Get Real" (1999), Hathaway recently starred in the 2005 film Havoc. Soon, she will star in the upcoming films Brokeback Mountain, The Devil Wears Prada and Becoming Jane. On stage, Anne took home the Clarence Derwent Award after performing in a production of "Carnival."

"I look my best after an entire hair and makeup team has spent hours perfecting me. When do I feel my best? When I haven't looked in a mirror for days, and I'm doing things that make me happy." Anne Hathaway

Brown-haired, brown-eyed, 5' 8" tall Anne Hathaway has the same name as William Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway. She was listed as one of People Magazine's "Breakthrough Stars of 2001" and Teen People Magazine's "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" (June 2002).

Tomboy Annie

Childhood and Family:

"I want to encourage people to be as cool as my brother Tom. He's 13, knows exactly who he is and what he wants, and never apologizes for or stops being himself!" Anne Hathaway

On November 12, 1982, Anne Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York, to attorney Gerald Hathaway and stage actress Kate McCauley. Along with her two brothers, Anne spent her childhood in New Jersey as a tomboy. Since she was a student at Millburn High, Anne has been interested in singing and acting. A fan of an American politics class, Anne enrolled at Vassar University, majoring in English with a minor in Women's Studies.

Anne is a strict vegetarian and loves to spend her Saturday afternoon doing anything fun with people she loves, and sleeping late.

Nicknamed Annie, Anne Hathaway, whose lifelong goal is to sing on Broadway, plans that if her acting career is not long lasting, she would like to be an English professor or a psychologist.

Ella Enchanted

"I love learning about new parts of myself through characters, and getting lost in people and learning how to breathe differently because all of a sudden you're this different person." Anne Hathaway

Initially performing at the local theater the Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, New Jersey, in a production of "Gigi" and "Jane Eyre," Anne Hathaway became the only teen to ever be admitted to the prominent acting workshop, Barrow Group, in New York City. She also performed as a member of the All-Eastern United States High School Honors Chorus at NYC's Carnegie Hall.

Three days after her performance at NYC's Carnegie Hall, Hathaway nabbed the regular role of intelligent daughter Meghan Green in her TV series debut, the Fox drama series "Get Real." Along with costars Jesse Eisenberg, Kyle Gibson and Eric Christian Olsen, Hathaway only stayed on cable until 2000. However, her performance received praise and earned her Teen Choice Award and Young Artist Award nominations.

2001 marked the breakaway year for Hathaway. Filmmaker Garry Marshall handed her the starring role of Mia Thermopolis, a socially awkward but very bright teenage girl who turned out to be the royalty, in his version of Meg Cabot's novel, the runaway success comedy The Princess Diaries. Hathaway was cast opposite screen legend Julie Andrews and received extensive recognition, giving her a MTV Movie Award and Teen Choice Award nominations. She later reprised her role in the 2004 installment, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Hathaway became Christopher Gorham's true love in Mitch Davis' adventure drama film inspired by John H. Groberg's book, The Other Side of Heaven (2001). The film is based on the true story of a male missionary in Tonga and was screened at the Sundance Festival in 2002.

She followed it up with a supporting role in Douglas McGrath's remake of Charles Dickens' novel, Nicholas Nickleby (2002, starring Charlie Hunnam). Anne played character Madeline Bray and earned a National Board of Review Award for Best Ensemble Performance. Meanwhile, Hathaway also performed on stage, starring as Lili in the Encores' staging of "Carnival" and won the Clarence Derwent Award.

In 2004, Hathaway was cursed by her fairy godmother with the gift of obedience in Tommy O'Haver's fantasy romantic comedy film, based on Gail Carson Levine's award winning novel, Ella Enchanted (she played the titular role). She also starred with Bijou Phillips in Barbara Kopple's R-rated gritty street drama Havoc (2005).

Hathaway just completed her upcoming film with Oscar winning director Ang Lee. The movie is an epic love story set against the sweeping landscapes of Wyoming and Texas and titled Brokeback Mountain. The romantic drama is based on E. Annie Proulx's short story and also stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. It is scheduled to hit theaters in December of 2005. Hathaway is also scheduled to finish David Frankel's comedy film, adopted from Lauren Weisberger's novel, The Devil Wears Prada (alongside Meryl Streep) and play the title role in Kevin Hood's romantic drama, Becoming Jane, a biographical portrait of a pre-fame Jane Austen.

"Quite frankly, I didn't become an actor to become a movie star. I have never dreamed about being the most famous person on the planet. I just want to do really good work." Anne Hathaway
