Childhood and Family:

Alison Brie was born Alison Brie Schermerhorn on December 29, 1982, in Los Angeles County, California. She is the daughter of Joanne Brenner, who once worked at a non-profit child care agency, and Charles Terry Schermerhorn, who is a musician and freelance entertainment reporter. She has a sister named Lauren. Alison graduated from South Pasadena High School in Pasadena, California in 2001. She went on to study drama at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California and gained her degree in 2005. She also attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland.

As a child, Alison Brie began performing at the Jewish Community Center in Southern California. While in college, she performed in the world premiere of “Peach Blossom Fan” at Disney's Redcat Theatre in Los Angeles. She has continued to perform on stage since graduation including at the Blank Theater Company's Young Playwright's festival and in shows at the Odyssey, Write-Act, and Rubicon Theaters. She even received an Indy Award for a memorable performance as Ophelia in the Rubicon's production of “Hamlet”.

In 2004, Brie starred opposite Kim Delgado and Staci Keanan in the short film “Stolen Poem”, which was directed by Austin Grady and written by Gordy Hoffman. Two years later, she made television acting debut as Nina in an episode of  the Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana” called “It's My Party and I'll Lie If I Want To”.

Brie's big breakthrough arrived when she landed the regular role of Trudy Campbell, wife of Pete Campbell (played by Vincent Kartheiser) on the television period drama series “Mad Men”. The series debuted on AMC on July 19, 2007 and has since earned critical acclaim. Brie shared a 2009 Screen Actors Guild in the category of Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama for her performance in the show.

“That's what makes it such a joy to work on. It's not like shows that try to distract you with fireworks while nothing much is happening with the characters. Mad Men is really an actor's piece; everything has deeper layers.”  Alison Brie (about working on “Mad Men”)

Brie co-starred with James Brandon Waterman and Chris Blasman in the 2007 comedy film “Dickie Smalls: From Shame to Fame”, played the role of Muffy in the made for television movie “Not Another High School Show” and starred as Mary Elizabeth in the horror film “Born” (both 2007). In the following year, she appeared in films such as “Salvation, Texas” (short), “Parasomnia”, “The Coverup,” “The Deadliest Lesson” (TV) and “Buddy 'n' Andy” (short). Also in that year, she starred as Rebecca Fuller in the web series “My Alibi”.

In 2009, Brie gained additional attention when she landed the main role of  repressed, straight-laced, Jewish college student Annie Edison on the NBC sitcom “Community”, which premiere on the network on September 17, 2009. The role has brought her a TV Guide Award for Favorite Ensemble.

Brie played Amber in six episodes of “Hot Sluts” and appeared in the short film “Us One Night” (both 2009). She went on to appear in the films “Raspberry Magic” (2010), “Montana Amazon” (2011) and “Scream 4” (2011, with Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere). Her voice could be heard in an episode of “Robot Chicken” called “The Godfather of the Bride 2” (2011).

In 2012, Brie was cast as Emily Blunt's sister on “The Five-Year Engagement”, a romantic comedy film written, directed, and produced by Nicholas Stoller. The film debuted at No. 5 in the box office and has received mostly positive reviews from critics. She also starred alongside Lizzy Caplan in the comedy film “Save the Date”, which won the Achievement Award at the 2012 Newport Beach Film Festival and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and was cast with Veronica Cartwright and Olympia Dukakis in the comedy/drama film “Misadventures of the Dunderheads” (2012).
