 | Saw the movie at least 5 times since I purchased the DVD. It's witty, entertaining and refreshing. THE best Will Smith movie I have seen yet. |

 | Two great comedy actors Kevin James and Will Smith together in one movie, I doubt this movie can be THAT bad. And as I thought, its not bad at all. Kevin James is so adorable, but I guess his character, not to mention the actor himself, helps bring it out even more. Will Smith was just great, but I didn't expect anything less.
An enjoyable and refreshingly charming and funny movie. I'm just completely tired of movies that are requires the people in there to act totally stupid in order to make the audience laugh. There's good laughing and then there's just... "what the hell?" kind of laughing.
They could have made the ending better, end it with a big bang, but I guess they didn't but oh well. Watch this movie, its worth it. |

 | Hitch is one of those movies youll watch once. From the adds it look hilarious, but when you get to watching it its not much. Its about a date doctor called Hitch (Will Smith), who helps people make it to their first kiss. He, just like his clients, has problems with women. He doesn't want to get committed. But one day he meets a lady whos also not wanting to get committed, and they begin going on. On the side of this Kevin James's character meets this famous and rich person and needs help getting her to notice him, so he calls up Hitch. The funny parts are with Kevin James and and sometimes with Will Smith, but really, there's not many parts youll laugh at. So save your money, and dont buy this. Just rent it. |

 | Love him or hate him, Will Smith is one of the most successful actors of the past decade. Nearly everything he's in does well at the box office thanks to him. Ali, Men in Black, Bad Boys, Men in Black II, etc. Now we have Hitch, which followed the trend, and had a great run at the top 10 for a few weeks. Though that's not saying much seeing as how this year's one of the worst years for movies, almost as bad as last year's as far as I'm concerned. But as good as Hitch did sales-wise, it's not much of a movie. What's worse- Will Smith isn't the one that delivers the big laughs. Though that doesn't matter to me, people expecting to have him be his usual self will be disappointed. But that could be for the best, as the movie's 100% date material, not a friday night of laughs.
Will Smith plays Hitch, a "date doctor" in New York. His job is to take complete losers and turn them into winners with the ladies. But he doesn't just take anyone. No, Hitch has class. His clients have to have good intentions in order for him to help them out. So Hitch isn't really just in it for the money when it comes down to it. He genuinely wants to help people, and that's cool. His clients so far have been pretty easy to help out. But when it comes to Albert Brennaman, it could be a bit challenging. Albert is the definition of "pathetic" when it comes to luck with the ladies. He's stubborn, shy, can't dance for his life, and the woman he wants is his boss. Yeah, things probably wouldn't work out unless he got help. With time, Hitch improves Albert, and he wins his boss over. The thing is, she's a huge celebrity of Paris Hilton proportions (minus the STDs, half-asleep face and crooked nose). So when the two get together, he gets thrown into her crazy life full of cameras and paparazzi. At the same time, Hitch has found someone he's actually interested in- Sara Melas, a gossip reporter for a local newspaper. Both couples do great with eachother for the majority of the movie until a client that Hitch turned down, one of those guys with bad intentions, screws over one of Sara's friends. She learns about the "Date Doctor" as he's known to the public, and does everything she can to bust him. I'm sure you know how this is going to end.
That's probably the shortest summary I've ever done for a movie in all my years of reviewing, and it's because there just isn't too much to the movie. The first third has Hitch helping Albert, the second third is the couples bonding, and the last is both trying to overcome a sudden problem. I'll admit, this is part of what makes it a good date movie since it's not complicated in any sense, but it was missing something of most other romantic comedies I've seen in the past year. But to me, it's seriously lacking in the comedy department, which surprised me. I had heard so many good things about Hitch, that when I started up the disc, I was bored until about 40 minutes into the movie. It took that long before I even cracked a smile. That's when I knew I was going to have problems with the rest of the movie. The only good I can give it is that the characters were good. Hitch is a great character, and I loved how he's a good guy- only helping out those who truely want the help. And he's not available to just anyone, his clients have to come to him via his other clients. As in, he helps someone out, then they tell a friend about him and get help themselves. 'a good concept. Albert, while clumsy, is a sweet guy and Kevin James plays him perfectly, though I miss Kevin's screaming comedy that I've seen on his stand-up special. He steals all the scenes he's in, and you feel bad for him when things go sour near the end. He plays the geeky loser so well that it works. And though it's been done to death in the previews, his dance moves still make me laugh. Eva Mendes does good with what she's given as well. Sara's one of the better female characters I've seen this year. She's an independent woman without drilling the concept into your brain over and over. She does her own thing, isn't that stuck up, and gives people a chance. Unfortunately, these three are the only ones that get any focus. Even Albert's girlfriend isn't given that much screen time when you look at it. In fact, well over 20 minutes passes from her last scene to her next. I actually forgot about her at that point, and wondered if there were some scenes taken out of her and Albert going out and doing things.
I'm ashamed by the video quality of the movie. Everything is faded and fuzzy. Some scenes even look out of focus. For a movie that did so well in theaters, you'd think a little more time would've been put into the home release's format. But the worst part is how bright some things get. When Sara's outside and wearing a white outfit, you'll be rubbing your eyes. Basically, it's her head on a white blur/glow. It's rediculous. At least the audio's a little better. The movie's almost entirely dialogue driven, so there wasn't much to screw up here.
Here's where most of the 2 stars comes from- the special features, of which there isn't anything special. First, there's no commentary track, so that disappointed me. I would've loved to have heard one with Will or Kevin. Instead, we get deleted scenes, gag reels and short featurettes. The deleted scenes add nothing, and the director cries over how they should've been left in when he does an introduction before each one. The only scene that would've been even the slightest bit alright was when Hitch runs into an ex-girlfriend of his- the one that made him want to help everyone. But the scene's akward, and feels forced for both actors. The gag reel is just the actors screwing up their lines. Dance Steps Made Easy focuses on Kevin's great dance scene, and is the only good special feature (though it runs at under 10 minutes). It's self-explanitory, and anyone that liked the scene will want to watch it, though the director butts in between takes and goes on about how cool Kevin is. Blah. There's a featurette that goes on about the locations that they shot the movie in, most of which were beautiful, and I'm glad they didn't use the typical locations for the movie. There are also ones for Will Smith taking on the challenge of appearing at the most public appearences in a 12 hour span, one on dating tips (lame) and one for the clothing in the movie. That last one's a bit of a surprise, and more dvds should have something like this. Well, ones that have a more diverse sense of style anyway. Oh, and there's this shoddy music video- Amerie's 1 Thing.
2 stars might be a little harsh for this movie, and I didn't really hate it either. It's just that the whole thing was so predictable, that it doesn't help the romantic comedy genre at all. Sure it's a fun movie and all, but with all that's come out for that genre this year, there's nothing that makes it stand out. And the disc's special features and quality were shameful. I'm wondering if a better edition is coming out in the future. Heck, maybe they'll even put on the Hitch music video this time around. I'll bet it has better picture quality than the product here does. Hitch is worth a rental at the most. Worth buying? Maybe if it's in a discount bin or something. |
