 | Off all the Wyatt Earp movies ever made, this is probably the most accurate looking. Everybody in this movie really looks like they're in the Old West. This kind of aauthenticity hasn't been seen since the days when William S. Hart made Westerns in the silent era. Sam Elliott, as always, is a pleasure to watch, and Stephen Lang does a great bad guy. At the time of the movie's release, I recall someone saying that Powers Boothe plays the most menacing Western villain since Lee Marvin in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." I think that's a pretty fair assessment. Kurt Russell bears an uncanny resemblance to the real Wyatt Earp, and Val Kilmer does a good Doc Holliday. How accurate the story is itself is, I can't really say, but I can say that this is a well made movie that's fun to watch and is faithful to the canons of the traditional Western. A much better film than Kevin Costner's "Wyatt Earp," which was released a few months later. |

 | "Tombstone" without a doubt is a epic among Westerns produced during the latter part of the 20th Century. Kurt Russell is great as Wyatt Earp, but Val Kilmer (as Doc Holliday) steals the show. He is truly magnificiant and adds a depth to the character that has not been shown in earlier versions of the "gunfight at OK Corral".
The direction under George Cosmatos is outstanding and gives the viewer a more than realistic view of life in the western US during the latter parts of the 19th Century.
An outstanding supporting cast helps to make this one of the more memorable westerns of all time. Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, et al, are terrific as the antagonists of the Earp Brothers. Sam Elliott and Bill Paxton as Virgil and Morgan Earp, respectively, create memorable characters.
Truly an outstanding work, this DVD belongs in the collection of every fan of this era or genre'.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! |

 | This movie must be included in a short list of the best Westerns ever made. Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp and Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday are good and convincing in their roles almost beyond reckoning.
This movie has it all: real, engaging human drama, intelligent dialogue, good character development, characters that cause the viewer to connect with them, humor, lots of action, but not just endless, mindless action, excellent time-piece sets and costumes, good authenticity (that is, no obvious anachronisms with the guns, etc.); and all this occurs with a timeless legend known to all as a backdrop.
This movie gets good right from the beginning with the voice of Robert Mitchum narrating some background information. Then, early on there are some scenes that truly are nothing less than works of art in this genre. The scripting and acting is simply flawless in places.
When the bad guys are introduced to the audience as really, really bad, there is a reference to a passage in Revelations that is gripping and ominous. Also, in this early scene there is a telling look on the face of one of the "Cowboys" that will become meaningful in the fullness of the story telling. I had almost given up hope that modern American filmmakers could use such subtlety. Way to go, guys and gals!
Be sure to pause your DVD when the Earps enter Tombstone for the first time, and carefully read Lester Moor's tombstone in Boot Hill. That made me laugh out loud. What a nice touch! Then, the scene where Wyatt handles the bully Faro dealer - WOW, this is just brilliant and edifying story telling with film.
Another scene that is perfection itself is where the "Cowboys" meet the Earps and Doc Holliday for the first time (Johnny Ringo twirling his sixgun, etc.). Movie making doesn't get any better than this.
I will avoid being too specific in my praise, because each viewer should have the opportunity to have the story unfold for them without foreknowledge of exact content, but I do want to give one example of the intelligent, edifying screenplay to which I've been referring. In an especially poignant moment between Wyatt and Doc, Doc says "There's no normal life Wyatt, just life." There were some smart and talented people writing this stuff.
Load it in your player, get comfy, and just enjoy.

 | Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell are the driving force that makes this film work. Sure it isn't totally realistic, but it is more fun than any other western I have seen. The gunfight at the OK Corral in the film is probably the best you will ever see at showing what most likely really happened on October 26, 1881. Val Kilmer steals every scene he is in and spews forth some of the coolest lines you will ever here coming out of a western movie. Kilmer's Doc Holliday is one of the only roles I can stand him in and he is an absolute genius at this part. I'm not a huge fan of Kurt Russell either, but he is my favorite Wyatt Earp by far. This is a must have western that is more fun than Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp, but I would see that one too for a more accurate depiction of Earp's life. |

 | Val Kilmir. Enough said. He plays doc holiday, and he makes the movie worth watching, and kurt russell is also worthy. I also enjoyed Dana Delany becvause she is beautiful and a great actress. The main reason why this movie was so good was the great lines. I GOT TWO GUNS, ONE FOR EACH OF YA! Just alot of western bad ass talk that we all love and reminds us of DO YOU FEEL LUCKY WELL DO YA PUNKS clint eastwood movies. It's all good and fun. It's basically about the ok corall, and mostly a true story but as with all movies, some of it exaggerated and obviously for enteratinment, not boring documentaries and they couldnt have chosen better actors than russell and kilmir. |
