 | If you are a Toriphile, you have to own this.
I have now heard Joni Mitchell mentioned in at least three Tori items reviewed. In industry magazines, Online reviews, radio reviews.
Maybe it is a generational thing. I have tried to listen to Joni Mitchell - Blue is one of the CDs I inflicted myself with for four weeks. I dont get it.
For me Joni Mitchell does not have a speck on Tori's Angel Dust.
So please stop. Stop comparing any part of Ms. Mitchell to Eileen. Any part.
Please.

 | Tori's performance is very good, HOWEVER the video and sound quality are awful. The camera work looks like it's a work of amateurs. This really damages the overall experience and that's a shame. Only for hardcore Tori fans. |

 | Let me begin by saying I have been a serious Tori fan for many years and I was thrilled when I heard that there was to be a live concert dvd released. I was lucky enough to see the Birmingham, AL show of this particular tour and I was hoping to see a little of what I saw live on the dvd, but I didn't. Don't get me wrong. Tori was amazing as always. But the light show at the concert I saw really played and worked WITH the songs and just added to how amazing it all was. None of that was shown in the dvd.
I really didn't like how they edited some of the footage. Yes, Tori does cuss in some songs. But why edit that out and show her flipping a bird to the crowd? That didn't make much sense to me. I was also hoping to hear more from Tori herself. But the interview was still great. And seeing her parents being interview was very interesting.
The priceless thing in this dvd set is the 6 songs that didn't make it on "Scarlet's Walk." "Tombigbee" has been floating around on the internet for awhile. I've had it for ages, but it was really nice to have it on a REAL cd. "Bug A Martini" has a great rhythym and it makes you want to dance. "Seaside," "Apollo's Frock," and "Indian Summer" are all amazing in their own ways. It is sad they didn't make it onto "Scarlet's Walk," but you can't mess with a masterpiece. And hey! We got the songs in the end so everyone is happy!
All in all, if you're a Tori fan you can't go wrong with this dvd. Just keep your fingers crossed that she does a dvd of the videos from 1998 to the present. THAT would be great! |

 | This is a wonderful DVD for any fan of Tori's, and her Scarlet's Walk Tour. She has always been an electrifying performer, who puts everything into her songs. She is always incorporating new sounds, and extra tidbits of lyrics into her live songs, which makes it a great experience: almost like you're hearing a new song for the first time.
The only thing I found annoying were the *sometimes* constant camera twitching, from one spot to another. It never seems to sit on her for very long in the same place. And, why did they have to alter "Professional Widow", by silencing certain words?
The DVD starts out with a mini documentary. Fans talk about how obsessed they are (and how many times they've seen her in concert), and you also see backstage with Tori before the concert. You even get a glimpse of Tori's daughter, and the *before show* ritual.

 | This DVD seems to be representative of the "Tori Experience" these days, for better or worse.
(An aside to illustrate my perspective: I GREATLY admire Tori and her work, but have mostly felt vastly disappointed with her concerts and with her obnoxious fans. If I wanted to hear 10,000 teenagers and obsessives drown out some Tori songs with their screams of adulation, all trying to prove that they're the ones that love Tori the most... well, I don't want to, and that's the point. "Ears with feet"? Hmph. Should be "Mouths with feet".)
Anyway. It's not a bad DVD. Tori seems tired alot of the time, like she's just kind of getting through. On a few songs she seems to really come alive, and in those moments it's glorious -- she's Tori again, before the fans and obsessives sucked the life out of her. The ridiculous editing of "Professional Widow" offends me -- not only am I disappointed that they blurred out the words, but I'm very disappointed that she let them; from what I hear, she made that decision because so many of her fans are teenagers, and if they left the words in the DVD would get a Parental Warning sticker. I say, don't rape the song, let the sticker happen. Anyway.
It's great to get a DVD of Tori (they really should put her videos from the last 13 years onto DVD as well). It's good to see her perform, and interviews with her are always enjoyable. It's great to see her lovely daughter, and get some glimpses of her friends, family, co-workers, and life.
Overall, though, the DVD left me with the same feeling most of her live performances have (with the exception of a WONDERFUL show back in 1991 at a small bar in Denver) -- I feel sorry for her, lost in stadiums full of screaming mindless idiots, her music and art gradually influenced by them, wearily plugging away at the piano and trying desperately to be heard above the din. Though she says she has enjoyed the touring life (and I greatly hope she has), I for one am very glad -- for her sake, and for the sake of her music -- that she is, at least for now, done. |
