SummaryCasting problems killed this movie

You are not going to find a better story than Top Gun, let's just get that straight right now. A down on his lucky, cocky pilot whose dad crashed into a ship of bananas over thailand gets to go to Mirrormarr to train with the best of the best. Val Kilmer is there! Iceman is a totally mean pilot that doesn't like things that are dangerous, except a good game of beach volleyball. I agree with him as iceman, but Rick Rossovich as slider when you could've had Judd Nelson? I don't get it. I totally wouldn't have gone with Tom Cruise as Maverick because you knew he was a winner and would go crazy and marry Katie Holmes later in his life. I would've had Ralph Macchio as Maverick straight out of his karate kid role. You never meet his dad in karate kid one, so he could've enlisted in the navy right after the tournament. He would've been picked on by the other guys and told he couldn't be a fighter pilot. The fact he didn't know karate didn't stop him from winning the all valley tournament later that same summer, so why couldn't Myagi teach him to become a top fighter pilot. I would've cast Corey Haim as goose. He's just real likable. The movie was good as it was, my casting would've taken it over the top. The question I've always had is, "why did the migs bug out when our guys had fired all of their missiles already?". Dumb russians.

SummaryLame movie.
Content
What can I say about Top Gun? This is an over the top movie that is replete with lousy acting, slipshod story writing, and is wanting in creativity, style, and quality. Perhaps it is because this movie is 20 years old that much of it appears to be outdated, but it does seem as though there could have been more improvements. Of course, CGI technology was not as advanced back then, so it is hard to hold the movie to such a high standard. Perhaps the worst part of Top Gun are the hackneyed lines that are contained throughout the movie. The lines could have been written by any immature 13-year-old boy with a lot of spare time on his hands. Although the creators of the movie obviously intended the movie to be timeless, they did a very poor job of it. This is the worst military-oriented movie ever created. For those seeking a higher quality military movie, I highly recommend Full Metal Jacket.

SummaryClassic Action Movie
Content
For any of you who have not yet seen this movie, see the defintive action movie of the 1980's and the movie that jump started Tom Cruise's career. In oevre of Tom Cruise, this is the flashpoint of his father/son complex flickswith the now old hat story of a son unable to live up to his father's legacy. There are great performances here, especially Val Kilmer's immortal "Ice Man." This is also strangely enough one of the only times you get to see the lovely Kelly McGillis (what ever happened to her?) The chase sequences are top notch, the cinematography is amazing, and the score is perfect. This is a class act, must own DVD.

SummaryNice...but the special features could have been better.
Content
Its the prototypical 80's action flick. I saw it lots of times in the theatre when I was 10 in 1986. I love this movie.

This edition is far richer in features than the original DVD release, which had none. The video, however, is still not cleaned up, its the same grainy stuff in the first release. The sound is excellent, however. And the special features are interesting, with all of the cast interviews and the survival training featurette. All to the good.

The problems start with the commentary track. Military advisors, writers, and Tony Scott. Far too crowded. They should have had separate commentary tracks for the advisors, director, and writers. Audio tracks don't take up much disc space. The special edition of Platoon does this perfectly.

But the most annoying part of this edition, is that during the commentary, Tony Scott talks about deleted scenes and the other filmed endings constantly. Where the heck are they on the DVD?

I think they're going to release another special edition for the 20th anniversary in 2006 when it (allegedly) gets re-released to theatres. If you have the original Top Gun DVD, don't bother with this one. It tries, but they held a lot potenailly interesting extras back for a twenty year old movie.
