Thom was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, by an entrepreneur father, and a restaurateur mother. He has one sister, only 11 months older. His debut was at the age of 7, in a second grade play about Christmas, where he played a toy soldier, and at the height of his performance, fell off the stage.

After attending Poly Prep high school, he moved on to NYU where he studied economics (his parents’ request) and drama. He graduated with honors, and continued studying after graduation with Susan Batson. After some Off-Broadway plays and independent films, he decided he needed to make the leap and move to Los Angeles, and try to make his own way. Within 8 months, he landed a small film executive produced by the Farrelly Brothers, as well as landing The Final Cut (2004) opposite Robin Williams.
