 | ...of the Rocky-saga reminds of the original and its' "in the spirit" sequel. I'd call it a sad chapter because of the moneymaking shining through, and the joy of storytelling seems to be totally gone. The script is a mess, it's like it ignores what made Rocky 2 so special; Don't forget that Rocky was retired already after the first rounds in the ring with Apollo Creed. His return in the sequel required a lot of strenght and training because of his eye-handicap, and he was, yes, basically "history" as a professional boxer. It's just sad. Rocky 3 becomes a parody on itself, intended to tell how money and too much success can make a man loose his head, and touch with the ground. The problem is; It's not presented in a believable way. The naive, yet charming Rocky is out of character, and if Rocky had lost his touch with reality it would have been very different I'm sure if Stallone had done his best with the script and direction.
The opening; Rocky vs that wrestling character, if that was supposed to be funny or cool or whatever, well, I found it stupid.
The original Rocky is a joy to watch, and Stallone delievers an Oscar-worthy performancy. A shame he didn't get one, he might have been more respected as an actor than he is today. The man is very talented and gifted, no doubt. But he somewhere wasted all that on too many flatscripted b-action-movies (like Rocky 3). Yes, it's sad that they wasted all that on this uninspired/uninspiring number 3.
I'd skip Rocky 3 and 4, and then you have an impressive triology. |

 | first of all let me just say the Rocky music is awesome such as eye of the Tiger by Survivor. Anyway let me get to my review. This is where the series enters the 80's and gets pretty wild. Rocky is so big and famous now that he has a statue of him,has a pinball machine, and he is taking part in charitie events where he gets to fight the greatest fake wrestler ever, Hulk Hogan. But fame has made him soft. Once he loses a brutual fight to Mr.T and Mickey dies of a heart attack Apollo Creed must help him train for the final match. This movie had the best and most training scenes. Rocky of course beats Mr.T in the end but it was not easy. It was a good idea to make Rocky famous in this one. Buy it. God bless you and have a great day. |

 | As we see Rocky in the beginning KO'ing one opponent after another as the newly minted world heavyweight champion, rock band Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger"- a song about the need to be the toughest, the meanest, and the best- plays along. Compare this scene to an earlier Rocky running up the Philadelphia Museum of Art steps while "Gonna Fly Now"- a song about the desire to be the best you can be- played, and the difference becomes obvious: Rocky has become an icon, and the movie series itself has reached blockbuster status.
This means that the warm feel-good heart of the first movie has been replaced with a rather cold and calculated approach to the series, one that tries to reach out to as many people as possible. It is an approach that admittedly works, though, since these calculations are meant to pull at the audience's emotional strings. It also helps, too, that all of the main actors from before are willing to jump into these new settings. But look a little deeper into ROCKY III, and the calculations become apparent: the 2001 DVD calls the movie an "actioner that comes out swinging with adventure, humor, and emotionally charged human drama," though that judgment is based on only the slightest indications of those emotions; ultimately, this is still the same Rocky people came to know, only in the constraints of the blockbuster style.
It is also clear here that Rocky is no longer the humble man he was in the first movie- he is larger-than-life, just like he intended, so some people who enjoyed the heart and soul of that first ROCKY may be dismayed to see Rocky this way. If you're one of those people, then you may be a little amused at the point whenever Rocky realizes the high life has gotten too much to his head (in other words, whenever he is knocked out by Clubber Lang, fittingly played in over-the-top fashion by Mr. T). But if you're not one of those people- and the odds are you probably aren't- then you'll be more than happy when Rocky's revenge against the said nemesis becomes successful. To make the long story short, if you expect to see Rocky the heavyweight champion, not Rocky the million-to-one shot, in ROCKY III, then you're going to feel right at home with this movie.
Rocky fans may not be too pleased with the treatment of the DVD, though. Even though ROCKY III is one of the Rocky films that many fans love, this is still given the same bare bones treatment as the ROCKY II DVD- the only extra is a theatrical trailer, and though the film is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen format, it has obviously not been cleaned up. Consider it appropriate, though: films that aim for people's wallets, not their hearts, have a bigger tendency of becoming artifacts of their time, which ROCKY III very much is. (DVD Features: 2 out of 5.) |

 | "Bust you up."
"Go for it." - Heavyweight Champ, Clubber Lang has more hurt in store for, Challenger, Rocky Balboa who has a tall glass of shut up with a big plate of smackdown on order & waiting for Lang in "Rocky III"
With this third installment, the "Rocky" saga reaches its pinnacle ("IV" is good, but, short & to the point with no real character developement, while "V", well, lets not talk about "V" & leave it at that).
"Rocky III" opens with the Rock being the reigning Heavyweight Champion of the World, living the good life & endorsing everything from frisbees, Budweiser, & The March of Dimes to Deloreans, Harley Davidson, & the Muppets. He has also had ten title fights all, of course, undefeated.
But, when, power hungry top contender, Clubber Lang challenges Rocky to a title shot, Rocky's world goes to hell. Rocky's manager, Mickey refuses to give Lang a titleshot & when Rocky confronts Mick about his descision he's shocked at the answer.
Mickey's job, all along, was to protect Rocky, because the beating Rocky received from Apollo Creed should have killed him & when Rocky became the champ he did the one thing a fighter should never do: he got civilized. The 10 title defenses that Rocky fought were hand picked. They were good fighters, but they weren't anything like Clubber Lang.
Rocky, a bit beside himself, coaxes Mickey into one more fight, with Lang, and then retirement. But, when Mick has a fatal heart attack on the way to the ring, Rocky, for the first time, goes to the ring alone. More worried about Mickey than the fight, Rocky easily loses the belt to Clubber Lang inside of three rounds.
With the loss of Mickey, as well as the Heavyweight Belt, Rocky has to overcome the one thing he never thought he would have to face: fear. He is about to get help from a very unlikely source who can help him get his edge back & more importantly, get back the eye of the tiger.
"Rocky III" has a lot going for it. Again, the underdog theme works. The moral of the movie is, if you let fear control you it will eventually conquer you.
MGM still doesn't give the fans what they truly want. Where's the featurettes? The deleted scenes? Behind the scenes look? a retrospective look back with Stallone & cast? Nothing. Just a trailer for "III". Whats worse, the new remastered edition in Dolby Digital & DTS has nothing, but, the movie. Talk about budget.

 | My favorite Rocky movie! I absolutely crave the Rocky trilogy, this is the last one in the Rocky series that matters, and is sure to give you a great third part sequel thrill! After beating Apollo in a rematch in Rocky II, Rocky is now the heavyweight champion of the world (that is how the movie begins) It then shows Rocky beating opponent after opponent (while the hit song 'Eye of the tiger' is playing), becoming more and more successful every fight. Companys start to make Rocky T-shirts, Rocky work out gear, Rocky drinking glasses, and even Rocky candy bars. But hidden in the audience during every one of Rocky's fights is another heavyweight boxer who maybe his worst nitemare, a fighter who is hungry for nothing but becoming the champion of the world, Clubber Lang (played by Mr.T, I solute him). Clubber claims that he wants a shot at the title and also claims that Balboa is no challenge for him, Mickey (Rocky's old trainer) sees Clubber in the audience during one of Clubber's fights and sees the look and determination of destroying Rocky, and hopes for Clubber not to get anywhere near him. But the title shot for Clubber is decided anyway, and when the fight begins with Mickey feeling very ill inside the locker room, Rocky gets the crap beaten out of him in the second round, by this wheerd new challenger who came out of nowhere and took the title just like that! Later when Rocky is embarrassed because of defeat, in the locker room where there is a medic in the room, along with Paulie, and Adrian. Rocky kneels down to see Mickey on a table, and has a long emotional conversation with his beloved trainer, as soon as Mickey tells Rock "I love ya kid" Mick passes away. After Rocky has no trainer and has lost the title he feels his life is falling apart, Apollo Creed comes back to whip him back into shape, because Rocky got soft and not careful of losing the title, Apollo states " you had a look in your face, the eye of the tiger, and now you got to get it back". Rocky travels into L.A. to a gym along with Adrian and Paulie where Apollo first started as a begginer boxer. Apollo grows angry at Rocky for not concentrating and refusing to train hard. So he decides to build up some speed in Rocky's boxing style by racing him on the beach. When Rocky quits in the middle of the race becuase of emotional flash backs of in the ring with Clubber, Apollo tells himself and the rest of the group. "It's over, it's all over"... By then, Adrian needs to have a talk with Rocky. This is where one of those classic arguments accurs, she encourages him to go for a come back at Clubber Lang. And then that's when the classic traing theme song "Gonna Fly Now" begins during Rocky's training. As soon as he is back in shape, Rocky and Apollo plan to make one of te biggest come backs in boxing history. And then a rematch between former champion Rocky Balboa and heavyweight champ Clubber Lang is arranged. In the locker rooms on camera before the dynamite rematch, Clubber Lang is on camera with maximum confidence. He is asked what his strategy against Balboa is. He states, "Don't need any, Balboa is so predictible he is stupid! The man comes straight ahead, and he's gonna' get hurt! Then Rocky shows Clubber who's boss and wins the title back, after a rousing finale. Rocky III also introduces us to Hulk Hogan in a wrestling match between Rocky and Thunder Lips (as he is so called in the movie). I also have the Sound track for Rocky III and it kicks ass, check that out on Amazon.com also! In this film with such a great cast including Talia Shire and Mr.T, you've really gotta hand it to Burgess Meredith who played Mickey, the series kinda went a little down the hill when he left the trilogy, because the series was always better when he would say stuff like "Get out o' here!!" to woman who came to Rock for an autograph or a kiss, he is truly remarkable. Rocky III was at the same time the funnest of all Rocky films, and yet really great emotion to it as well. Although the fight scenes may be unrealistic and foolish at times, they are still entertaining tactics, like in the first fight between Rocky and Clubber. It is fun to see Rocky come out swinging and then see Clubber come forward after him. It may not be so great to certain people, but hey, it's alot better then watching an ESPN classic boxing rerun on TV. Rocky III inspires, Enjoy! |
