Background:

British actress Suranne Jones is best known for her playing Karen McDonald on ITV1's soap opera “Coronation Street” from 2000 to 2004 and DC Rachel Bailey on “Scott & Bailey” from 2011 to 2013. For her work on the first series, Jones took home two British Soap Opera Awards and a National Television Award. She is also notable for her work in “Vincent” (2005-2006), “Strictly Confidential” (2006), “Harley Street” (2008), “Five Days” (2010) and “A Touch of Cloth” (2012-2013). In 2014, she portrays Sister Joan Livesey on BBC's “The Crimson Field.”       

On May 23, 2014, Jones proclaimed her engagement to magazines editor Laurence Akers after dating for six weeks. She previously was engaged to Jim Phelan, an IT consultant. Jones has supported several charitable organizations. She is close friends with former “Coronation Street” co-stars Sally Lindsay and Antony Cotton.

Childhood and Family:

Suranne Jones was born Sarah Anne Jones on August 27, 1978, in Chadderton, Greater Manchester, England, to an engineer named Chris Jones and a secretary named Jenny. She grew up in her family farms along with her older brother, Gary. Young Sarah was talkative, and she became a victim of bullying at school. She suffers from carpophobia (fear of wrists), which she considers maybe developed from viewing imagery of Christ's execution and stigmata as a child.

Sarah was a member of the Oldham Theatre Workshop, in which she developed friendship with future “Coronation Street “ co-star Antony Cotton. She obtained a BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts from Oldham Theatre Workshop.

Career:

Suranne Jones began acting on stage when she was a child. When she was 8, she landed the role of Gloria in “Wait Until Dark.”Soon after securing an agent at 15, she began to perform in theatre. However, Jones did not launch a career on television until four years later when she got a small role as Chris Collins' girlfriend, Mandy Phillips, on a “Coronation Street” episode airing on April 23, 1997. It was followed by a one-episode stint as Emma in “City Central” in 1998 and a five part stint as Linda in “My Wonderful Life” in 1999.

Jones's big break arrived when she was cast in a new role of Karen McDonald (née Phillips) on the long running serial drama “Coronation Street” in 2000. The character made its debut on the show on the episode broadcast on June 21, 2000. The actress informed her decision to quit the soap in May 2004 and her final scenes were aired on December 26, 2004. For her bright acting, Jones won the 2004  National Television Award for Most Popular Actress and the 2004 and 2005 British Soap Awards for  Best Actress.

After leaving “Coronation Street,” Jones took on the lead role of Beth on the detective TV series “Vincent,” with Ray Winstone starring in the title role. The series ran for two seasons on ITV between from October 10, 2005 to November 6, 2006. During November and December 2006, she portrayed a bisexual sex therapist named Linda Nelson on the six-part TV drama “Strictly Confidential.” In 2007, she stared as Julie Bottomley in the black comedy TV film “Dead Clever: The Life and Crimes of Julie Bottomley,” opposite Helen Baxendale and Dean Lennox Kelly. The same year, she toured the UK in the stage production of the film “Terms of Endearment,”in which she played Emma, opposite John Bowe and Linda Gray. In 2008, Jones portrayed Dr Martha Elliot on the ITV medical series “Harley Street,” opposite Paul Nicholls.      

Jones starred as Ruth Slater in the three part drama “Unforgiven” (2009), written by Sally Wainwright. Playing a woman found guilty of murdering two police officers when she was a teenager who, upon release from prison, is determined to see her sister who was adopted, she was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award in 2010 in the category of Best Actor (Female) for her performance. Still in 2009, Jones appeared as Mona Lisa in the two-part episode “Mona Lisa's Revenge” in “The Sarah Jane Adventures” and as Sarah in the American comedy/ drama film “Love and a Long Shot,” starring Steve Bourque, Mark Breit, and Jack the Dog. In the following year, she starred as DC Laurie Franklin in the TV series “Five Days” and also as Sarah in the BBC 1 show “Single Father,” opposite David Tennant.  

After guest starring in “Doctor Who” in May 2011, Jones essayed the role of DC Rachel Bailey on the ITV six-part detective series “Scott & Bailey,” opposite Lesley Sharp, who plays DC Janet Scott.     The show returned for a second series in 2012 and a third series in April 2013. A production of a fourth series is set to begin into Spring 2014. For her performance, Jones was nominated for  National Television Award for Most Popular Female Drama Performance and Radio Times - TV Detective in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Meanwhile, in 2012, Jones starred as Eve Caleigh in the BBC series “The Secret of Crickley Hall.”  

Jones played DC Anne Oldman on a spoof detective drama, “A Touch of Cloth,” in 2012 and 2013. She played Lila Pettitt in the made for TV film “Lawless” (2013).

In February 2014, Jones starred in Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of Virginia Woolf's “Orlando” at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. The play earned mostly rave reviews from critics, while Jones herself got positive to mixed reviews fro her performance.   

Jones was cast as Sister Joan Livesey in the British drama series “The Crimson Field,” which premiered on BBC One on April 6, 2014. Her co-stars in the series include Hermione Norris and Oona Chaplin.
