British actor Rupert Grint is widely popular for portraying the redheaded best friend of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, in the highly successful “Harry Potter” movies. He won a Young Artist Award and a Satellite Award for “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone” (2001), a Phoenix Film Critics Society nomination for “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (2002), a MTV Movie nomination for “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” (2005), a National Movie nomination for “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” (2007) and a People's Choice nomination for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (2009). He ended the chapter of his “Harry Potter” career with the two part “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (2010/2011). Outside the franchise, Grint has acted in the films “Thunderpants” (2002), “Driving Lessons” (2006), “Cherrybomb” (2009) and “Wild Target” (2010).
In his spare time, Grint enjoys drawing, playing golf and watching soccer, His other interests include swimming, football, listening to music and playing the guitar. Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint was born on August 24, 1988, in Hertfordshire, England, to Nigel Grint, a racing memorabilia dealer, and Jo Prasons, a homemaker. He has one brother named James (born in 1990) and three sisters named Samantha (born in 1993), Georgina (born in 1995) and Charlotte (born in 1998). As a child, he wanted to become an ice cream man. Growing up, Rupert became the center of attention because of his red hair and was given the nickname “Copper Knob” by his great-grandfather, while his classmates calling him “Ginge” (short for ginger, which is British slang for red head). He began acting in school productions and joined a local theater group called Top Hat Stage and Screen School. Rupert was educated in a Roman Catholic primary school before attending Richard Hale School, a boys' school in Hertford. He graduated in 2004.

A huge fan of J.K. Rowling's “Harry Potter” book series, Rupert Grint decided to audition for the role of Ronald Weasley. For his audition, he made a video of himself dressed up as his female drama teacher while rapping about his desire to play Ron in the film. Shot by her mother, the amusing video caught the attention of the casting department and he got a callback. He underwent several more auditions and a screen test before eventually winning the part. Two other newcomers were brought in to star with him, Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,” the first of the “Harry Potter” movie series, was released on November 4, 2001, in the United Kingdom and November 16, 2001, in the United States. Directed by Chris Columbus, with the screenplay by Steve Kloves, the film earned generally positive reviews from critics and was nominated for a number of awards, including the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Music, Original Score. Produced with a budget of $125 million, the film grossed $974,733,550 worldwide and became the most successful film of the year. For his good acting, Grint won a Young Artist for Most Promising Young Newcomer and a Special Achievement Award for Outstanding New Talent at the Satellite Awards. He was also nominated for an Empire Award for Best Debut and shared a Young Artist nomination for Best Ensemble in a Feature Film.

After the auspicious debut, Grint was cast as child prodigy Alan A. Allen in the British movie “Thunderpants” (2002), opposite Bruce Cook. Directed and co-written by Pete Hewitt, the film did not perform well at the box office. It was not until he reprised the role of Ron Weasley in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (2002) that he was put back in the spotlight. With the same director and writing team as the first movie, the second installment was a commercial victory and was nominated for three BAFTA Awards in 2003. Grint and other cast mates jointly nabbed a 2003 Phoenix Film Critics Society nomination for Best Acting Ensemble.

In 2004, Grint returned to the big screen with the third film “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” which was directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Released on May 31, 2004, in the United Kingdom and June 4, 2004, in North America, the film was nominated for Oscars in the categories of Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score and Best Achievement in Visual Effects, and won an Audience Award at the 2005 BAFTA Awards.

After providing the voice of Peter Pan in a TV special documentary titled “Happy Birthday, Peter Pan” (2005), Grint again portrayed Ron in the fourth sequel “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” which was directed by Mike Newell. An immense box office hit, the film debuted at No. 1 in the U.S. “Goblet of Fire” took in almost $896 million worldwide, which made it the highest grossing release of 2005. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Art Direction and won a 2006 BAFTA for Best Production Design. Grint was nominated for a MTV Movie award for Best On-Screen Team for his performance, which he shared with Radcliffe and Watson.

In 2006, Grint starred in the coming of age story “Driving Lessons,” which was written and directed by Jeremy Brock. He received rave reviews for his performance in the film, where he costarred with Laura Linney and Julie Walters.

The next year, Grint acted in sequel “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” (2007), which was helmed by David Yates and scripted by Michael Goldenberg. It was a critical and commercial success and is currently the eighth highest grossing film of all time. “The Order of the Phoenix” was nominated for BAFTAs for Best Production Design and Best Special Visual Effects. For his performance, Grint was nominated for a National Movie Award for Best Performance by a Male, which he lost to costar Daniel Radcliffe.

In 2009, Grint reprised the role of Ron Weasley for “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which was again directed by David Yates. The movie was the second highest grossing film of the year and is currently the eleventh highest grossing movie of all time worldwide “The Half-Blood Prince” was nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best Cinematography and BAFTA Awards for

Best Special Visual Effects and Best Production Design. Also in 2009, Grint starred as Malachy in the British drama “Cherrybomb,” opposite Robert Sheehan, Kimberley Nixon, James Nesbitt, Conor MacNeill and Paul Kennedy. It premiered at the Berlin Film Festival on February 8, 2009.

Recently, in 2010, Grint portrayed Tony in the comedy remake “Wild Target,” which was directed by Jonathan Lynn. Costars of the film include Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Everett, Eileen Atkins and Martin Freeman.

Grint will appear in the two part movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which will serve as the seventh and final installment in the “Harry Potter” film series. Part 1 is set to be released in the U.K. and U.S. on November 19, 2010, and Part 2 on July 12, 2011. The actor will also star in the upcoming biographical movie “Eddie the Eagle” (2011), which is being directed by Irish director Declan Lowney.
