Scottish actress Rose Leslie is well known for playing Ygritte in the HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones” (2012-2014), where she jointly nabbed a Screen Actors Guild nomination for her performance, and Gwen Dawson in the ITV drama series “Downton Abbey” (2010). She first attracted attention in her native country with her role in the TV film “New Town” (2009), from which she took home the Scottish BAFTA Award for  New Talent - Acting Performance.

Childhood and Family:

Rose Leslie was born on February 9, 1987, in Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, as Rose Eleanor Arbuthnot-Leslie. She grew up at Lickleyhead Castle in Aberdeenshire, in which her family has lived for over 500 years. Her father, Sebastian Arbuthnot-Leslie, is the Aberdeenshire Chieftain of Clan Leslie, and her mother Candida Mary Sibyl “Candy” Leslie (née Weld), is the great-granddaughter of Simon Fraser, 13th Lord Lovat (a descendant of Charles II). Her parents have the 12th century Warthill Castle in Aberdeenshire. Rose is the middle of five children. She attended Rayne North primary school in Aberdeenshire, and then Millfield School in Street, Somerset. In 2008, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

New Town

Rose Leslie made her acting debut in an episode of the television series documentary “Locked Up Abroad” called “Lima” (2008), playing Kim. In the following year, she portrayed Rhian in the made for television movie “New Town,” directed and written by Annie Griffin. Delivering a fine acting, she was handed a BAFTA Scotland for New Talent - Acting Performance.

In 2010, Leslie joined the British television series “Downton Abbey,” playing Gwen Dawson for seven episodes. She went on to appear in the BBC TV series “Case Histories” in 2011 and in the ITV detective series “Vera” in 2012. She played the role of Fiona in the British teen drama film “Now Is Good” (2012), an adaptation of the novel “Before I Die” by Jenny Downham. The film, starring Dakota Fanning, Jeremy Irvine, Paddy Considine, Olivia Williams and Kaya Scodelario, earned mixed reviews from critics.

In 2012, Leslie got bigger attention when she was cast as Ygritte, a wildling woman known for her red hair, in the second season of the HBO fantasy drama series “Game of Thrones.” She remained in the show to season 10 in 2014. For her work in the series, Leslie picked up a 2014 Screen Actors Guild nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, sharing with co-stars like Alfie Allen, John Bradley, Oona Chaplin, Gwendoline Christie, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Mackenzie Crook, Charles Dance, Joe Dempsie and Peter Dinklage, among others.

“I certainly relate to “Ygritte,” in the fact that she is so strong and also ruthless, as well, and I feel that especially within “Game of Thrones” (2011), I think that as a show, it is one of the frontrunners for showing dominant female characters and making sure that men answer to women, rather than the other way around.” Rose Leslie

After “Game of Thrones,” Leslie played the Young Milner in season 2 of Channel 4's  conspiracy drama “Utopia” (2014) and starred as Sarah, Thomas Farriner's sister-in-law in the ITV drama “The Great Fire” (2014), set during the Great Fire of London in England in 1666. She also made a guest appearance in the BBC One series “Blandings” (2014), playing Niagara Donaldson. The same year, Leslie made her American film debut in “Honeymoon,” a horror directed by Leigh Janiak as her feature film directorial debut.

In 2015, Leslie is set to appear in the season 4 of the British series “Luther,” starring Idris Elba. She also will play Chloe in the upcoming supernatural action movie “The Last Witch Hunter,” starring Vin Diesel. Directed by Breck Eisner, the film is scheduled for October 23, 2015 release.
