 | Perhaps there are some good points made in this movie about doctor patient relationships and the overly technical aproach to western medicine that is taught in medical school... However, this is one of the most cynical emotionally explotative movies I've ever seen. The movie is like some kind of insidious Pavlovian device designed to ellicit, nay wring an emotional response out of the viewing audience. From the insanely intrusive and overwrought music to the asinine and oftimes preachy dialog, to the completely predictable plot, it's all designed to make you FEEL and is as subtle as getting hit repeatedly in the head with a shoe. The attempts to tug on my heartstrings are so blatant, so obvious, so phony that I found them to be offensive. For example: the scene where Patch gets an old and depressed woman to eat by dragging her into a wading pool filled with spaghetti is one of the most stupid, childish, embarrassing, not to mention logistically improbable scenes ever committed to film. At least we suppose she eats because all we see her do is idiotically cavort in the pool and dump spaghetti on William's head. Problem solved! The bad guys, who are cartoonish straw men, and the good guys, i.e. Patch, might as well have been wearing black and white hats for all the subtlety of the music and dialog. I am not a monkey and don't appreciate being manipulated as though my IQ was that of a chimp. Of course Patch's unorthodox ways are vindicated in a final "court" scene which rings as false as it is formulaic. It's Robin Williams at his most icky and moviemaking at it's most disingenuous. |

 | 109 minutes of insufferably nauseating shtick delivered by one of the most shameless sell-out hacks to ever disgrace the entertainment industry. |

 | People were hung at Nuremburg for less than this crime against humanity. I found it addictively appalling, in its cringingly predictable and patronising plot, script, music and Robin Williams playing his usual so-brilliant-he's-nearly-insane-but-wacky-and-all-too-humane schtick.
And then the only fit woman gets murdered and it's all over ickily washed over in about 5 minutes, while Adams gets off a medicine-no-licence rap (aside from theft of hospital supplies) with some illogical rant to the gallery. Evil that got one star off me only so I could post it.

 | This is sort of a "balancer" film and dvd for me. very enlightening and affective. beyond profits and professions, this film was produced mainly to honor the real Patch Adams. as a dvd collector, i have realized that this expensive hobby puts me in a higher place to be educated, not merely to be entertained. a singular blessed act of compassion, though minute, may and might make this world a better place. <--- every dreamer's dream. this film forced me to realize that people who can buy nice things (that) cost money (from Schindler's List), should continue to help and help and help and help.. especially in the midst of crisis and societal imbalance. no second thoughts or opinions about this film, its transfer or its release.
