 | I'm on the fence with this one. It's certainly watchable but ultimately it's exploitation crap posing as an important cautionary tale. The film starts off promising enough with the nubile but virginal Nicole(Reese Witherspoon) falling for brooding grunge boy David(Mark Wahlberg) starting with whispering sweet nothings to more intimate contact on a rollercoaster. Daddy Steve(William Petersen) objects to David but can't exactly put his finger on it. Maybe it's the fact that David pummeled Gary, Nicole's platonic friend, and blackened Nicole's eyes in the process. Whatever subtlety there was in the film is thrown out the window with an extended siege by David and his grunge buddies of Nicole's house that plays like a junior version of "Cape Fear". It's a shame because this film has a pretty good pedigree with it's cast and director James Foley("At Close Range", "Glengarry Glen Ross") at the helm. The film can be recommended for some pretty good performances by Witherspoon and Wahlberg. Just be forewarned that this is thriller-lite. |

 | This movie is actually more realistic than boring, poorly-acted Lifetime movies. None of the situations are too dramatic or forced. |
| Rating | | | Date | May 10, 2005 | | Summary | A great thriller, teens can relate! | Content
 | I'm sure many can relate to this...how many girls out there dated a guy when they were a teenager who was an overpossesive psycho? Or vice versa? How many parents were scared to death of their daughter being hurt by a scoundrel guy she had "fallen for"? Well that is the ground that this movie covers. Truly great show and well worth renting or owning!
Mark Wahlberg stars in one of his first features as a hoodlum drug dealer from the wrong side of the trackswho falls in love with Nicole Walker, an upper-middle-class high school girl (Reese Witherspoon). In this psycho-drama (with the emphasis on psycho), Nicole happily loses her virginity to her first love, but, when she begins to doubt the relationship, his tenderness turns to violence, as he stalks and terrorizes her and her friends and family. The girl's father never trusted him in the first place, but his reservations about his daughter's first serious boyfriend are interpreted as Oedipal paranoia, until the boy and his drug-dealing, date-raping buddies besiege the overly fortified house in a twisted attempt to win back Nicole's love. The Seattle setting juxtaposes a grunge rock underworld with an over-privileged suburban household, and includes a very sexual ride on a roller-coaster. |

 | Well this movie started off semi-enjoyable. An early shower scene of Reese Witherspoon made me happy. Thie movie sets up with a father-daughter conflict that you've seen in hundreds of other movies. Enter Marky Mark, sweeping the girl off her feet. Then comes the part when the girl argues a lot with the father. And so on... we've all seen this before. It seems like the writer ran out of ideas at the end of the movie, though. Or perhaps he was getting bored with all the build-up he was creating with the characters that he was just like "Alright, screw the rest of the plot, lets get to the action." And so he does. And soon after the movie ends at a seemingly premature 1hr. 16min. Woohoo.
Don't waste your money on this DVD, or even the rental, they play it all the time on USA or the like. |
