SummaryWhy is this good?
Content
Seems the time of Platoon and such films died way before the 90's. This is yet another over-hyped film I was nearly forced by rabid fans to watch. Resevoir Dogs is a boring tale of immorality and senseless murderers that are portrayed as the good guys..... Yes that's all.

SummaryTHAT'S HOW THE STARS ARE BORN
Content
Although many think that Tarantino's star was born with "Pulp Fiction" in 1994, now we know it happened in 1992. And such things happen once in a century. Those of you who watched "Reservoir Dogs" in cinema then or a little later on video will be telling everyone in 30 or 40 years: "Yes, I saw this guy from today's encyclopedia do his first steps in cinema. It was all happening before my eyes". If there were some cinema-bible there would be definately written there that after the first day when God created film, on one of the other days he created Quentin Tarantino. Because he is the phenomenon rarely seen nowdays in cinematography.
And just think - what are "Reservoir Dogs" at first glance? - a movie made by an unknown director for about $1 million. A movie about a jewelry shop robbery. Not even about a robbery itself (you know what I mean). Stars? Well, Keitel, Roth, Madsen and Buscemi are great actors but not some major stars. All the action takes place practically in one room and all the characters are dressed in black and look the same at first instant. So how did it happen "Dogs" gained a worldwide popularity and were praised both by audience and critics? What's so special about this movie? Why is it listed among the greatest flicks of all time and one of the best criminal films? Some say it's Tarantino's approach to violence, some say it's his dialogs, others... Well, people say a lot. But nothing I guess can explain this phenomenon. It's just the way it is. We watch it and we can't turn away from the screen. And there's no need to explain anything. Why try? How would you explain why you like Mozart's music for example? Or how would you explain why you like to watch the sunset? There are things that lie beyond our understanding and we'd better leave it like that.
It's not neccessary to say that "Reservoir Dogs" is a must to watch and have - I think every cinema buff realizes that. So have and watch, furthermore this DVD-edition got brilliant bonus features. You'll know everything you ever wanted about Tarantino and his first movie (hope you'll forgive me my ignoring of his real directorial debut "My Best Friend's Birthday" :)

SummaryDialogue that I would bathe in if I could
Content
Tarantino's inimitable genius lies in his ability to simultaneously build up and destroy film cliches. Far from being a 'Hollywood director', he should be classed as an 'in spite of Hollywood director'.

Here and elsewhere he delivers the style of dialogue that is unrivalled and unparalelled elsewhere in the movie world. The scenes between Harvey Keitel and Steve Buscemi are ones that I could have watched for hours on end.

Each characters personality oozes from every word he speaks. Whether it's the cocky bravado of Mr. Blonde, the semi-panicking and somewhat overwhelmed Mr. Pink, or the calm and unflinching Mr. White, not a breath is wasted and not a word is out of place.

This film's small budget actually turns out to be a help rather than a hindrance. It is this small budget that restricts most of the action to a single warehouse. This has the affect of heightening the feeling of claustrophobia when they find out there's a rat in the group, and exacerbating the tension between characters.

It has been said many times but it is worth repeating that in 'Reservoir dogs' Tarantino shows us parts of organised crime that we don't see elsewhere. These are not calm gun-slingers that think nothing of putting a bullet in the eye of anyone who crosses their path. These are real human beings who act irrationally, don't always think things through and (with the exception of Mr. Blonde) do care if they kill someone.

Tarantino's original ideas in respect of character behaviour and dialogue should have marked the turning point in the history of Hollywood. However other writers appear to have reverted to their old lazy selves and it will take another Tarantino to come along and shake everything up again.

SummaryReservoir Dogs
Content
Four Perfect Killers. One easy Heist. One Rat.

Listen, RD is a great movie. It has flaws, but thats ok. It has ultracool dialogue, hong-kong style violence, and references to the hong-kong and american crime movies that writer-director Tarantino grew up with. The film opens with Tarantino himself showing just how cool his writing can be as he explains his interpretation of madodnna's Like a virgin to the rest of the team.

Then it cuts to the aftermath of the heist, where the four remaining criminals try to work out who set them up.

With a cast that does the dialogue justice, at the end we are surprrised to find that some of these ultra cool killers affect us more than we expected.

I didnt love this as much as i did the later Pulp Fiction, but its still a great movie by a guy who obviously loves great movies.
