 | I saw the movie in the theater and enjoyed it very much! The ending was a bit abrupt but the ride was great. Baldwin played the part just right and the whole world of The Shadow was very well done. The only problem I have with the DVD is that, to my knowledge, it has never been released in wide screen format. How Universal could release such a good movie in pan-and-scan only is a mystery. Even the DTS version isn't in wide screen! Aside from that, I think this movie would be a pleasent suprise to sci-fi fans. |

 | THE SHADOW is classy, very HIGH PRODUCTION VALUES noir/"comic"(in this case,Radio era serial )Bad Guy-Good Guy hero adventure. Alec Baldwin plays Lamont Cranston, New York Playboy(of the ilk of Bruce Wayne)who is really a black adept of the occult arts FORCED to redeem himself by becoming a "crime fighter". His battle with the incarnation of Genghis Khan (played just below the stratosphere by John Lone)provides many good "Indiana Jones"-type set pieces and a final FORCE vs.The FORCE face-off between these two Masters of the Dark Side(while a James Bondish/nuclear bomb counts-down to 007 annihilation of Manhattan)...
The ensemble cast...including Jonathan Winters and Ian McKellen, playing an oblivious,Jacques Clouseau-like character...is generally excellent. The edge of sly wit(lacking in enterprises as SPAWN & SIN CITY) makes the movie more acceptable to general audiences. "WHO KNOW WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN?" the fantastic 30's art design of THE SHADOW is really where the answer successfully lurks in this cross between the first Tim Burton BATMAN;the Al Pacino-Warren Beatty DICK TRACY;and the new Frank Miller extravaganza,SIN CITY.If you liked these graphic novelesque cinamatic adaptations of the PM superhero, you'll likely enjoy Alec Baldwin's outing as THE SHADOW. |

 | I have to say that I am not familiar with any of the Shadow's comics, games or had had any other contact with the character apart from this movie so I cannot compare the character to other sources, nor can I take part in discussing the technicalities and the specifics like other reviewers have. Therefore, coming from someone that did not "know" the Shadow prior to the film I have to say that the movie was really good!
Needless to say, Alec Baldwin, Tim Curry, Ian McKellen, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The only setbacks are in relation to not providing enough background on the character in the movie, and the reason why the Shadow has to laugh (so annoyingly) before making an appearance.
The plot, the setting, the special effects, the music and the costumes are all wonderful!
In short, it is a movie worth watching!

 | Sure, it could have been longer, more character-study, more this and that. But you know what? This production put as much as it could in the lavish sets and into the story that it could. What we got was pretty damn good. Alec Baldwin did a Fine job, if not Great. I can't see anyone else doing the SHADOW, but him. And, if by some odd miracle, there should ever be another Shadow sequel, I would hope Alec would do it again. I love every scene that is shown, every shot, every angle, and every word spoken. Sure, there is a tad of campiness here and there. But not much. Jonathan Winters is a crack-up! John Lone was superb. But the real magic is in the tone of the film, and how the SHADOW is portraid. I'm grateful that there is even a Movie to watch. The music is Fantastic and haunting. Just like the SHADOW himself. So some night, pop up some popcorn, start watching the SHADOW, and have FUN! |
