SummaryExcellent film
Content
Beyond Rangoon is one of my favorite movies. Through a fictional story of a young woman finding purpose again, it tells the true story of Nobel Peace Prize recipient and leader of the democratic movement, Aung San Suu Kyi, who was under house arrest from 1989 to 1995 and 2000 to 2002, was imprisoned in May 2003 and is currently under house arrest. In December 2004, the junta announced it was extending her detention for at least an additional year. Her supporters, as well as all those who promote democracy and improved human rights, are routinely harassed or jailed. This well-acted and beautifully photographed movie is a story that needs to be known. I cannot understand why it is not offered on DVD.

SummaryBeyond Political Correctness Please
Content
This is categorically John Boorman's worst film in which all involved are more interested in making a political statement rather than a movie.

The story follows Patricia Arquette's character who's a doctor suffering from PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder) after her family is murdered. A friend invites her to go on vacation in Burma to cheer her up but she is caught in a clash between political demonstrators and the military regime that rules the country. Suddenly she is filled with vigor and fights along side the poor oppressed proletariat.

One lengthened word for this film: B-o-o-o-o-o-ring! The screenplay is so superficial it might as well be a 'Free Tibet' bumpersticker. This movie is primarily appealing to nostalgic hippies and pseudo-intellectual pacifists. As I said earlier, this film is so pretentious that it forgets the film/entertainment aspect of its mission. If Boorman was so concerned about getting the message through he should have made a documentary instead of this crap. Unless you really care about the activist Aung San Suu Kyi, don't bother watching this film as it has nothing to offer other than its appeal to your pity.

SummaryWhere's the DVD?
Content
This film should be released on DVD! A wonderful story with a an uplifting ending. Why not honor the struggle for Democracy in Myanmar by releasing this movie on DVD? More people should be familiar with Aung San Suu Kyi's fight for freedom. The superb score is extremely moving. Furthermore, the beautiful scenery and Burmese culture will make you want to immediately travel to SE Asia.

SummaryHelp get this on DVD - letterbox
Content
This is an outstanding movie; and it is a travesty that it is not yet on DVD. Besides the excellent plot, action and acting, the photography and music deserve DVD quality. The beautiful panoramas and extended action scenes should be in widescreen; ideally it would be letterbox. If you try to order, and ask to be notified when avalable, you will be indicating your vote for this. If enough of us do so, perhaps the studios will respond to the demand.

SummaryThis movie deserves to be released on DVD!!!
Content
I went to see this film three times when it was in the theatres. It is such a great movie. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it is about a doctor whose grief from the senseless murder of her husband and son keeps her from practicing medicine. Her sister takes her to Burma (Myanmar) to help her get away from her suffering. While she is there, she gets caught in the clash between their harsh military dictatorship and nonviolent democracy movement. As she struggles to get across the border to free and democratic Thailand, she learns how she is far from alone when it comes to grief and suffering. She is finally ready to put her medical knowledge to good use again. This movie really should be made available on DVD. I hope it will be someday soon and, more importantly, I hope the people of Burma win their nonviolent struggle for democracy. Long live Aung San Suu Kyi!!!
