 | 'Love and Basketball' is a low-budget African-American romance film that delivers and in a big way! Quincy (Omar Epps) and Monica (Sanaa Lathan) develop a friendship that transcends from adolescence to college and adulthood. Remarkably, they never seem to appreciate how much they love each other until situations present itself that threatens to tear them apart. I am only going to give two examples, so I will not spoil the film (if you haven't seen it yet):
Well as the title suggests they both have a great love for basketball and you are taken on a journey down a very real road of what it is like to become a male and a female basketball star. I think as a male, it is more obvious in sports with the tokens and advantages but for females you might have to choose between playing in Europe or working at Sears. Remember this film is supposedly right before the WNBA. Quincy almost loses Monica, after expressing his great love for her during his final years as a Senior in high school. Surprisingly, she ends up going to the same college as him via basketball scholarship -- just barely. Monica's temper almost ruins everything!
Then Quincy moves on with his life playing professional basketball with the Lakers, and Monica decides after being in the European Women's Basketball Leagues she is ready to come back to Los Angeles, her home. She comes at a time when Quincy is fighting a basketball injury, and just when you think she may have won his heart --- noda!
I love the twists in this movie. Please rewind or skip back playing the last few minutes of the film or you might come to the wrong conclusion which would ruin the whole film. Please notice what Monica is wearing. And what Quincy mumbles out of his mouth.
You have to watch the entire film to get it. Or else you will be stumped which makes you have to watch the film. No cheating here! I love this romance story. It could have had less language or profanity. That was totally unnessary in this movie. But beyond all this, it is the very best African-American Romance Drama of the past 25 years. Don't let the simplicity of it being a low-budget film fool you into believing it can't hang!

 | If you are like me and LUV basketball then this is a movie for you. If you are me and LUV Omar Epps, then this is a movie for you. If you don't know who Danaa Lathan (The Best Man, The Wood and Blade)is yet, then this is a movie for you.
Basically, Love and Basketball is a great movie. A little teeny-bopper and predictable and all that jazz, but who cares? It is cute, sweet and it has girls playing some awesome ball, which is always a good thing.
This is a romance wrapped around basketball. Or basketball wrapped around a romance. Either way, it has all the makings of a chick flick but it isgood anyway. Girl likes boy. Boy likes girl. They go steady. For about fiveminutes. They are friends. They get too cool for each other. They grow up.They get hormones. I am guessing you are seeing where this is going by now. |

 | I'm a basketball fan and I actually bought this movie
without expecting such a deep film. This is a movie
almost anybody should be able to enjoy. Why? It's
powerful, passionate, and believeable. The story is
about a boy and a girl went from hate to preteens to
becoming loving teenagers.
Sanaa Lathan is the young woman hoping to become the
first woman to play in the NBA. She faces heavy re-
sistantance from a mother that dislikes her tomboy
attitude and demeanor. The young Quincy is young guy
has alot to live up to considering his dad was a NBA
player for several years. After years of being friends,
Monica and Quincy become lovers after each suffer
failure in other relationships. The irony is that what
they have in common seems to be what starts to drive
them apart.
After a while Quincy starts a downhill slide after he
finds out that his father has been unfaithful to his
mother and their relationship is torn apart because
of the lies. Then as Monica starts to have sucess
with her basketball career she and Quincy start
to drift apart and breakup. Monica decides to leave
college to go play professional basketball in europe,
while Quincy continues his fall from grace by going
pro too soon and ends up being a 2nd round pick by
the Los Angeles Lakers. He then proceeds to tear his
ACL in a game.
Monica by this time is missing her former lover by the
time she sees this happen on the TV. She then decides
to come home hoping to spark and with Quincy only to
be shocked at the news that Quincy is getting married
to a stewardess(Tyra Banks)and from there her life seems
to go in limbo and she doesn't know where to go from
here.
Monica then decides that Quincy still loves her and
decide to win his love back by playing a game of one
on one. If Qunicy wins then Monica will buy him a
wedding present and wish him the best... However, if
She wins then it's because Quincy truely wanted her
to win. The ending is rather predictable, but it will
satisfy you nonetheless.
While this is a predictable movie, it still is a great
movie because of the fire and passion it brings. Sanaa
really pours her heart into this film as does everybody
else. It does the right things that prevent it from
being a typical cheesy chick flick. It has the ability
to make men and women alike feel for the characters and
hope they re-unite at the end.
It doesn't hurt that we get a non stereotypical movie by
african american actor/actresses. I would sugges this movie
for everyone. |

 | Love And Basketball was my all time favorite movie. It is not only a chic-flic but a movie that can relate to both sexes. This movie shows some real life situations that children face as they turn into young adults. When you see this movie you will see the difficult situations high school and college students are faced with everyday. Not only trying to fall in love with someone and devoting your life to them but also being an athlete and knowing right from wrong and doing what you believe is the right thing to do. Being an athlete I find this movie to be very true. When the main character Q is faced with choosing which college to go to he not only wants a great basketball team but he also wants to be with his girlfriend. He doesn't really know if his decision will be best for him but watching the movie you would be able to see what happens. Many athletes are injured while playing a sport. This movie goes through a process an injured player would have to go through in order to get yourself back into the game after a long period of time and try your best and know deep inside your heart that you can do it, you just have to be willing to give your time and devotion to that game. The movie is very touching and really makes you think of the real life problems that are thrown at you on a day to day basis. Nobody's life is perfect so you must learn to deal with anything that pops into your daily schedule. Being an athlete isn't an easy thing to do when it comes to college. So watching this movie and knowing that someone else is in the same position as you and they were able to get through and have a life afterwards and were very happy with the results helps me to know that I can do it and how hard I really have to work in order to get what I want out of life. |
