Manchester City vs Arsenal: Manuel Pellegrini calls into question Vincent Kompany's role in defeat Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini last night criticised the decision-making of his captain Vincent Kompany after the Belgian conceded the penalty that set Arsenal on the way to their first win at the Etihad Stadium since 2010.

“I don’t think it was a penalty, but it was unnecessary [for Kompany] to do it,” Pellegrini said of the defender impeding Nacho Monreal in the box, after the defeat which leaves City five points adrift of Chelsea.

“The movement of Kompany allows [Monreal] to dive. I am not saying it was a bad mistake of the referee. The penalty changed the game, but it was not the reason we lost.”

Even Pellegrini’s counterpart, Arsène Wenger, admitted that the penalty was questionable. “My initial reaction from the bench was a penalty. Somebody told me we were a little bit fortunate, I have to watch it again,” the Frenchman said.

Pellegrini – whose side last night flew off on a five-day break in Abu Dhabi, where they will play Hamburg in Al Ain on Wednesday – did not deny this result was significant in the title race. “The game we must play at Stamford Bridge [on 31 January] is a very important game,” the Chilean said. “We must close the gap to two points. I hope we are going to recover and play the way we are playing so far.”...
