Shakira reaches 100 million 'likes': Do Facebook fans and Twitter followers matter?

Shakira reaches 100 million 'likes': Do Facebook fans and Twitter followers matter? Whenever, wherever, we’re meant to be together.

Saying that to one human being is difficult enough, but try telling that to more than 100m people.

Yet this is a trick currently being pulled off by singer Shakira on Facebook.

In the past few days, the Colombian superstar, known for her hits such as Whenever, Wherever and Hips Don’t Lie, became the first person to break through the 100m ‘likes’ barrier on the social network.

It means there are only two things on Facebook with more fans: Facebook itself and Facebook’s page for its smartphone app.

‘Thank you so much for joining me and propelling me on this incredible journey,’ said the singer, thanking her fans. ‘I couldn’t do it without you all.’

Shakira’s numbers rose off the back of her self-promotion during the World Cup in Brazil – she has a large fan base in South America – but she is also a savvy operator on Facebook, regularly posting videos and photos to keep interest high. Her social media team post her messages in a range of languages to please fans from every corner of the world.

Shakira’s nearest human challenger in terms of Facebook likes is footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, followed by rapper Eminem and singer Rihanna.

The problem with Facebook, however, is that many of these fans don’t exist – as many as 10m of Shakira’s fans are estimated to be fake profiles, while her timeline is littered with examples of spam – some of it leading to *** sites – as cybercriminals try to cash in on her online fame.

But among her fans who are actual real people (three out of ten of them are called Maria and one out of ten are called José), she is obviously doing something right.

‘Shakira is particularly good at engaging with her fans using Facebook via selfies, quick video blog posts and sharing more personal moments,’ said Matt Navarra, community director at The Next Web tech news website.

‘Likes are the lowest value social action a person like Shakira can get on Facebook, but they are still powerful as they signal to Facebook’s sophisticated algorithm that her content is interesting and popular.

‘This will lead to it getting more reach and exposure within Facebook. It also helps Shakira – or her PR team – spot what types of content her fans like to see, and that they should post more of.

‘Liking something is also very expressive for the person doing the liking. It’s someone saying, “This is what I like… this is who I am”.’

While likes serve a purpose, Navarra said comments and shares are a better indicator of a celebrity’s social media power. He said he wasn’t surprised by Shakira’s popularity on Facebook, given that it lends itself to more visual content than, say, Twitter....
