Corrie's Catherine Tyldesley: I wouldn't dare wear Eva Price's skimpy outfits

Corrie's Catherine Tyldesley: I wouldn't dare wear Eva Price's skimpy outfits There’s been many a night when Catherine Tyldesley’s dad Graham has watched his actress daughter tottering across the Coronation Street cobbles and had to avert his eyes.

Not because a tram has been exploding in her direction or because Tina-killer Rob Connor is back on the prowl again with a blunt instrument – although it is, to be fair, a real risk these days in Weatherfield.

It’s because some of the outfits Catherine wears to play Rovers barmaid Eva Price are a little on the, well, skimpy side.

“Dad tells me ‘You’ll catch your death, Cath!’ she laughs. “It can be pretty embarrassing sometimes. But it’s all part of the character. In fact I pick a lot of Eva’s clothes myself. Eva uses her sexuality to get what she wants – she’ll wear a low-cut dress and go and get it. She wraps guys around her little finger.

“She just does not care, she has so much confidence. That fuchsia pink bodysuit she wore for the fun-run storyline was all my idea – I made her Aerobics Barbie. It was a fun run after all.

“But I must admit I wouldn’t wear the majority of them in real life. No way! Eva’s got more *** than me.”

Catherine, 30, prefers 50s-inspired clothes, cinched in at the waist to show off her hour-glass figure.

“If I put a smock on I look very silly,” she laughs. But it’s hard imagining her looking bad even in a bin bag.

A toned size 10 with enviable curves, and a recent nominee for Sexiest Female at the British Soap Awards, she’s become one of soapland’s favourite pin-ups.

And she’s also clearly a hit with the men on and off screen.

She split from personal trainer toyboy Sam Witter, 23, in April last year but last week confirmed a new relationship with Tom Pitfield, 27, also a personal trainer. The pair met at Hale Country Club in Cheshire, where he works and she works out with her own trainer, Paul Boys.

But despite her penchant for fit good-looking hunks, the actress has had her share of body demons – which may explain why some of Eva’s frocks raise a blush in her cheeks as well as her dad’s.

She’s made no secret of the fact that at 17 she was a size 22 and 15st. She now sticks to a diet and exercise regime to maintain her shape.

The 5ft 8in star says: “My motto now is if it ran, swam or grew in the earth, then eat it. If it doesn’t then it’s processed, so I don’t. It’s about being educated about food and balanced, sensible eating.

“I might have chicken and broccoli or an omelette for breakfast, tuna steak with salad for lunch and a stir-fry for dinner. I’m probably more on top of it than any other member of the Corrie cast. They’ll often ask me what they should be eating. I’m the resident nutritionist! I have a cheat meal once a week though, like a roast. I’m curvy and I do embrace that.”

She says her weight as a teen was due to gorging on comfort food. “It was comfort eating. I put quite a lot of weight on during my GCSEs. My parents always gave me healthy, nutritious meals, but it was the decisions that I made in my own time that were wrong,” she says.

“In the morning I’d eat cereal and toast, then at break time I’d have a teacake and a chocolate bar. At lunch I’d have pie and chips, snack on more bread and, although my tea would be healthy, I’d take biscuits up to my room afterwards so my parents weren’t aware of how much I was eating.”

The turning point came at 16 when she was taking a dance class and the teacher called her an Oompa Loompa.

She was mortified – and later when she auditioned for a part in a stage production of Grease and the role went to a slimmer actress she decided that she had to diet or be forever cast as the ‘fat friend’.

She threw herself into exercise and dieting – walking the treadmill for an hour at a time and working out to a Patsy Palmer DVD in her bedroom.

“The weight dropped off because I was that big. I lost all the weight within a year, so by the time I was 18 I was a size 10 and 10st,” she says.

But when the star went on to complete a three-year musical theatre course at Birmingham School of Acting and landed her first lead, in the musical Little Me, the dieting began to get out of control.

“I wasn’t eating enough for the calories I was burning in a day as a dance student. I was mostly eating vegetables, not enough protein and snacking on sweets. Looking back at photos of me, I was tiny,” she says. After years of trying every diet under the sun, she finally settled on a low-carb option called Paleo, which she follows now. It’s pretty much a caveman diet, which means that any food which wasn’t available to them you don’t eat either.

The star doesn’t tend to weigh herself, though, and instead measures her vital statistics – waist, hips, arms and thighs – every two months. She says she prefers a fuller figure.

“Kim Kardashian has an ideal shape,” she says. “But then it’s difficult to say what is ideal. She has the money to train every day and employ chefs. But it is refreshing to see a woman who embraces her curves.”

And although Catherine – who did a two-month stint on Emmerdale and appeared in Holby City and BBC drama Lilies before she reached the cobbles – insists she lacks Eva’s confidence to flaunt her own curves, she’s flattered by the flurry of attention they can generate in the press.

“It doesn’t bother me,” she says of the paparazzi’s habit of zooming in on her assets.

“I just let it go over my head. And if someone compliments my outfit that’s great. For me it’s about being happy and comfortable with how I look.

“I certainly don’t think I’ll ever win Sexiest Female, though it is flattering to get those awards. Michelle Keegan (her co-star who won the award) rolls out of bed looking amazing. I voted for her every year.”

Catherine shared a dressing room with Michelle, who left last month when her character Tina MacIntyre was murdered by Rob, a storyline currently gripping the nation.

“I thought Michelle was fantastic. I was hooked on the storyline. It is a bit weird watching your best friend die on screen though! It will be weird working without her,’’ she says

“I’m sure whatever she does next she will smash it. I’ll be going down to Essex to visit her and I hope to go to her wedding to Mark (Wright).”

Off screen Catherine’s own new venture is the 2014 Great Swim, Europe’s biggest open water swim series....
