Fassbender gets 'Frank' in new film about rock stardom Actor Michael Fassbender relived his childhood dream of being the lead singer of a rock band in new film 'Frank'.

The fictional tale, which also stars Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal, was inspired by charismatic performers including Manchester comedian Frank Sidebottom.

"I was in an attempt of a band when I was growing up," Fassbender explained as he attended the European premiere of 'Frank' at the Lighthouse Cinema, Smithfield. "But we were never any good. We didn't even have a name but we had plenty of fantasies of making it. So it was nice to return to that."

Fassbender was required to wear a giant papier-mache mask – a nod to Sidebottom's unique performance style – while shooting the movie.

It was an experience the Oscar-nominated actor found thoroughly enjoyable. "It was quite liberating, wearing the head," he said. "And it covered up my recent Botox," he joked.

The film was shot on location in Ireland and Fassbender enjoyed returning home for the shoot....
