Meryl Streep to star as Emmeline Pankhurst in Suffragette Meryl Streep has signed on to play famed suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst alongside Carey Mulligan (Shame), Helena Bonham Carter (The King's Speech), Romola Garai (Amazing Grace), Anne-Marie Duff (Shameless), Natalie Press (Ill Manors), Ben Wishaw (Skyfall) and Brandan Gleeson (In Bruges) in Suffragette.

The film will chart the early activists for womens’ liberation and their run-ins with the government and will reunite Streep with The Iron Lady scribe Abi Morgan, while Sarah Gavron (Village at the End of the World) is set to direct.

Suffragette would seem to signal another Oscar charge for Streep in the near future, the actress having been nominated for a record 18th time this year for her performance in August: Osage County....
