August: Osage County sees a sensational Meryl Streep dishing out toxic truths This display of thespian fireworks, adapted by Tracy Letts from his Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, revolves around a family in meltdown on the sweltering Oklahoma Plains.

No one is singing Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’ here, that’s for sure.

Meryl Streep is sharp-tongued, pill-popping matriarch Violet, who says whatever she thinks, and it ain’t pretty. When her husband (Sam Shepard) disappears, Violet’s daughters dutifully assemble: resentful eldest, Barbara (Oscar-nominated Julia Roberts) with uneasy husband (Ewan McGregor) and precocious daughter (Abigail Breslin); dizzy Karen (Juliette Lewis) with her dodgy fiancé (Dermot Mulroney), and secretive, stay-at-home spinster Ivy (Julianne Nicholson).

There is no greater purpose about American family or values writ large but sickeningly funny misbehavin’ and a flow of gaspingly cruel barbs. Streep, wig askew, *** drooping, loopy on medication, is sensational, not least in the set piece family dinner dishing out dysfunction, toxic ‘truths’, revelations and recriminations, with physical assault for dessert....
