U2 OPEN FREE BERLIN GIG WITH FALLEN WALL-INSPIRED ANTHEM

Thursday night (05Nov09) was extra special for rockers U2 - they picked up the first award at the MTV Europe Music Awards before taking to the stage for a free concert at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.

The Irish rockers claimed the Best Live Act at the ceremony in Germany before proving their performance skills as part of a concert marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Bono and his bandmates opened the show with their One anthem, while the words 'Freedom' and 'One Love' were lit up on the famous landmark behind them.

U2 wrote One while recording in Berlin following the fall of the Wall in 1989.

BEYONCE & JAY-Z ARE THE KING AND QUEEN OF EUROPE

BEYONCE was a true triple threat at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin, Germany on Thursday night (05Nov09) - she picked up three prizes and led the honours haul.

The R&B superstar claimed trophies for Best Female, Best Song (Halo) and Best Video Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It).

She paid tribute to her husband Jay-Z, who was also a winner in the Best Urban Act category, when she won the Best Video award, thanking him for "putting a ring on it".

And, unlike at the MTV Video Music Awards in America in September (09), there was no protest from Kanye West to taint her victory - the rapper stormed the stage at the VMAs, insisting Taylor Swift's Best Female Video should have gone to Beyonce.

Green Day were also big winners at the EMAs, scoring the night's Best Rock Act award, while U2 topped off a magical evening by claiming the ceremony's first prize as Best Live Act.

The Irish rockers also performed a six-song mini-gig in front of 10,000 fans at the German capital's iconic Brandenburg Gate, marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Other big winners on the night were German rockers Tokio Hotel, Lady GaGa and Eminem, who beat Jay-Z and Kanye West to claim the Best Male trophy.

Beyonce and Jay-Z provided rousing performances, as did Shakira, Leona Lewis and Tokio Hotel. Katy Perry thrilled the crowd during her second stint as host at the MTV EMAs, changing outfits a staggering 12 times and paying homage to Liza Minnelli in German-based wartime movie classic Cabaret with a raunchy, speakeasy-style medley of tracks by Lady GaGa, Kings of Leon, Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta.

JONAS BROTHERS REVEAL JACKSON INFLUENCE AT MTV EMAS

The JONAS BROTHERS paid tribute to King Of Pop MICHAEL JACKSON at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday (05Nov09) - revealing how the JACKSON 5 were their first major influence.

The trio introduced a tribute piece to the late Thriller hitmaker, during which Jackson superfans performed hits like ABC, Bad and Man in The Mirror in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany.

And the siblings told fans that listening to the Jackson 5's I'll Be There as kids spurred them on to become the new century's leading family performers.

Nick Jonas told the MTV audience, "This year we saw the loss of the greatest pop musician the world has ever seen. We and MTV wanted to pay tribute to the true king of pop, Michael Jackson. His unrivalled talent has shaped the musical landscape, influencing artists old and young."

Brother Joe added, "The first time we heard Michael's voice was when our dad played the Jackson 5's I'll Be There. We were amazed by the one-of-a-kind talent. The way that he and his brothers came together to entertain the world has been an obvious influence on us. Michael Jackson influenced every listener and every future performer with a talent the world had never seen before. As a writer and a performer he was the best."

Jackson, who passed away in June (09), was honoured at the MTV event's American counterpart, the MTV Music Video Awards, in September (09) with a performance from the star's sister Janet and a moving tribute from Madonna.

JACKSON 'HAD A PREMONITION HE WOULD DIE'

MICHAEL JACKSON had a premonition he was close to death, according to his skin doctor and friend DR ARNOLD KLEIN.

Klein was left chilled after his last meeting with the late King of Pop - just days before he died - because of the way Jackson said goodbye.

He tells TMZ.com, "I think in some weird way he did (have a premonition).

"He went around to everyone in my office and said goodbye to them all. He never did that. I felt very strange. I had a feeling he was saying goodbye to us (for the last time)."

MTV HIT BACK AT U2 GIG BERLIN 'WALL' REPORTS

MTV bosses have denied they built their own Berlin 'wall' to restrict people from viewing U2's free gig in the German capital on Thursday night (05Nov09), insisting they beefed up security to ensure fans' safety.

The Irish rockers' devotees were left fuming over MTV's decision to erect a temporary security barrier around the Brandenburg Gate, where the One hitmakers performed in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

But organisers of the show, which was part of the MTV Europe Music Awards, insist the security measures were put into place to ensure the safety of the 10,000 ticket holders.

A statement from MTV reads, "MTV wanted to ensure that the 10,000 music fans that attended tonight's MTV EMAs present U2 at the Brandenburg Gate enjoyed a safe and happy experience.

"The safety and well-being of all attendees at any MTV-produced event is of the highest priority. MTV worked closely with our local promoter, DEAG, the Borough of Berlin and the Berlin Police Department to create a comprehensive security plan for the event. To that end, MTV placed a temporary security fence around the site perimeter.

"Under no circumstances did MTV build a 'wall' of any kind in or around the U2 production site."

And Berlin's Mayor Klaus Wowereit has praised MTV execs for arranging the U2 gig, insisting it was the perfect way to celebrate the anniversary of the wall's destruction.

He adds, "The Pariser Platz was the scene for a joyful celebration of peace, love, freedom and music that Berlin will never forget. Congratulations to U2 and MTV for bringing this unique moment of musical history to the city of Berlin."

LOHAN BLASTS 'DEADBEAT' DAD

LINDSAY LOHAN has posted a bitter Twitter attack against her father MICHAEL, branding him a 'disgusting, deadbeat dad'.

Lohan flew into a rage after her dad leaked tearful phone conversations between the two to the press on Wednesday (04Nov09).

Michael Lohan claims the move was an attempt to help his daughter kick her alleged drug addictions - but Lohan insists she doesn't need his help and is considering prosecuting him because the leak illegally breached her privacy.

And she took to her Twitter blog on Thursday (5Nov09) to share her disdain for her dad with fans.

Lohan wrote, "He's a deadbeat dad. He's disgusting to do this. He doesn't deserve attention. He needs help.

"It really hurts my mom for me and my siblings. I'd feel the same if I were a mother."

Lohan also offered some insight into her troubled early years, before Michael and her mother Dina divorced.

She adds, "She (Dina) blames herself for staying (with) him for so long, I'd beg her not to leave (because) he always threatened to kill her if she did...after disappearing, then coming home after being gone for several days while cheating on my mother&abusing substances.

"It's so sad that I even have to share this (with) everyone, but I haven't had a real relationship (with) Michael Sr. in years. That is the truth.

"I just hope I can show others how to be strong through times & to be able to stand up for yourself and loved ones no matter what!"

POLANSKI TO BE HONOURED AT SWISS FILM EVENT

Moviemaker ROMAN POLANSKI is to be the subject of a film tribute in Switzerland - the country where he has been detained since his arrest on 30-year-old sex assault charges in September (09).

Swiss Film Archive officials will show the director's films and have invited critics and movie experts to speak about Polanski, while the filmmaker fights extradition to the United States, where he faces sentencing for raping a teenager at a party in 1977.

Polanski fled America on the eve of sentencing in 1978 and has lived in exile in France and Switzerland ever since. He was arrested at a Swiss film festival as part of an international police coup.

Organisers of the upcoming tribute have stressed the event won't address the director's legal troubles, but it will honour his work.

Polanski will not be able to attend the tribute - Swiss authorities have rejected three attempts by Polanski's attorneys to have the director released on bail.

FELDMAN TURNING TO HAIM FOR SUPPORT THROUGH DIVORCE

Actor COREY FELDMAN has turned to his childhood pal and LOST BOYS co-star COREY HAIM for support as he struggles through his divorce from wife SUSIE SPRAGUE.

Feldman admits he's "gutted" and "heartbroken" about his marriage breakdown, after he was slapped with divorce papers from the Playboy pin-up last week (ends30Oct09) - just days before their seventh wedding anniversary.

Sprague has also filed for sole custody of their son Zen, five.

Feldman briefly fell out with Haim over his old friend's drug problems, but the pair has since patched up its differences and have turned to one another for comfort.

In a post on his website, Feldman writes, "He (Haim) called to make a truce... I still love the guy."

The rekindled friendship is also helping Feldman through the pain of losing his one-time pal Michael Jackson in June (09).

A source tells the National Enquirer, "Feldman was hit with a double whammy - the divorce filing and the death of close friend Michael Jackson - and Haim has been there to give him a shoulder to cry on.

"They've been through hundreds of battles - including drug problems, divorce and personal and professional jealousy. But the Coreys are still there for each other."

The two stars appeared together in a reality TV show last year (08), which also featured Sprague.

Grace Gummer, Streep's 23-year-old child with husband Don Gummer, made her stage debut in New York last year (Nov08) in dark comedy The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents, and now she's making the transition to the small screen to play a 17 year old in Gigantic on the kids cable network Nickelodeon.

Gummer will play the daughter of a famous celebrity couple in the series, which is due to air next year (10). The show will also feature Joe Mantegna's daughter Gia, 19.

Grace isn't the first Streep child to test her acting skills - her older sister Mamie, 26, appeared in the movie Taking Woodstock and epic TV mini-series John Adams.

AAMES EYES CAREER AS FINANCIAL ADVISER

Former child star WILLIE AAMES is plotting to launch a new career as a financial adviser, one year after declaring bankruptcy.

The Charles In Charge star became homeless for a brief period in 2008 after claiming debts over $350,000 (GBP218,750), and survived a suicide attempt while suffering a deep depression.

He explains, "I was sleeping in parks I was sleeping in parking garages."

But he insists his fortunes have changed and now the 49 year old is working to help others avoid financial pitfalls.

He adds, "It's not unusual for anyone who's been through traumatic experiences to be an advocate for other people so that you can help them stay out of that situation if possible... I was very good at making money (but) I didn't know how to hang on to it."
