Natalia Vodianova is a Russian supermodel and actress who now bases in the United Kingdom. She was launched to prominence as the face of “Gucci Envy” fragrance, and has since attained respectable success as a runway, editorial and advertising campaign model. On the acting front, Vodianova has appeared in the films “CQ” (2001), “Probka” (2009) and “Clash of the Titans” (2010).
As a philanthropist, Vodianova is a founder and the president of the Naked Heart Foundation, a charitable organization that attempts to provide a safe and inspiring environment where to play for every child living in urban Russia. Since 2006, the organization has built about 40 play parks in Nizhny Novgorod. She has also actively worked for other charitable causes.
Childhood and Family:
Natalia Mikhailovna Vodianova was born on February 28, 1982, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. Her father abandoned the family when she was a little child, and they did not have any contacts until she had become famous. Natalia was raised in a poor district of Nizhny Novgorod by her mother along with two half sisters. When she was a teenager, she helped her mother sell fruit on the street and later established her own fruit stand with a friend to help family out of impoverishment.
On November 2001, Natalia married a British real estate heir, Justin Trevor Berkeley Portman. They had a wedding ceremony in St. Petersburg on September 1, 2002. The couple have three children: son Lucas Alexander ( born December 22, 2001), daughter Neva (born March 24, 2006) and Victor (born September 13, 2007). Natalia and her husband declared their split in June 2011. Natalia Vodianova is known by the nickname Supernova.
Clash of the Titans
Natalia Vodianova attended a modeling academy at the age 15, and by age 17, she had relocated to Paris to try her hand at modeling. She signed with Viva Models.
After having over 40 runway shows under her belt, Vodianova experiences huge break when she became the face of “Gucci Envy” (Eau de Parfum) fragrance. The print ad successfully launched her career. As the formally hot new face in town, she next worked for Calvin Klein's big Spring show, and even made her feature acting debut in Roman Coppola's “CQ” (2001), opposite Billy Zane and Gerard Depardieu.
Vodianova has since appeared in print ads for L'Oreal Paris' Pure Zone (2003), L'Oreal Paris' Hot List Summer Must-Haves! Campaign (2004), L'Oreal Paris' new Panoramic Curl mascara (2005), Calvin Klein's “Euphoria” fragrance (2008) and Versace designer luxury merchandise (2008). She also has completed advertising campaigns for Shiatzy Chen, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, David Yurman, Marc Jacobs, Pepe Jeans, Diane von Fürstenberg, Chanel, Guerlain, and others.
To date, Vodianova has strutted down over 175 catwalk shows for American and European based designers' ready-to-wear and haute couture collections as well as appeared in editorial spreads in fashion publications worldwide. Her face has decorated the cover of “American Vogue” and “British Vogue,” to name a few.
In 2009, Vodianova returned to acting by starring in the Russian drama film “Probka,” opposite Oksana Akinshina and Pavel Barshak. Also in 2009, she embarked into a three year agreement to be a brand ambassador for the French lingerie company Etam and will design a lingerie collection each season during the term of the agreement. The collections will be marketed under the brand Natalia pour Etam. She also became the new face for 2010 of Kamiseta, a fashion line in The Philippines.
In 2010, Vodianova was cast as Medusa, the half-demon mortal Gorgon, in “Clash of the Titans,” a remake of the 1981 film of the same name, directed by Louis Leterrier. The cast also included Sam Worthington, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, Alexa Davalos, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson.
Vodianova is set to play Ariane in the film adaptation of Albert Cohen's novel, “Belle du Seigneur,” helmed by Glenio Bonder and co-starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The film is scheduled for a 2012 release.
