 | there's not much more to say about how badly every aspect of this film sucks. other reviewers have pretty much said it all. i'll just say this: i hated Sum Of All Fears and I never even read the book. To me, an adapted films correlation to its source material is irrelevent. If the movie was an exact replication of the book that would not make it any better. the movie sucks on its own merit. from the acting (cumulatively, the worst i have EVER SEEN), to the dialogue (often painful and generall obvious), to the action (as in the complete lack thereof), this movie is a complete failure. And Ben Affleck should thank whoever it was that gave him permission to be a movie star. |

 | I've never been one of the biggest Tom Clancy/Jack Ryan fans out there, but I enjoyed the first three Jack Ryan films(THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER,PATRIOT GAMES,and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER).After CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER came out,a lot of people(including me)were wondering if another Jack Ryan film would ever come out,and then in 2002,it finally did. How does the fourth Jack Ryan film--entitled THE SUM OF ALL FEARS--which is a prequel to THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER,PATRIOT GAMES,and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER--meausure up? Read on for my review of this:
Exit Alec Baldwin(the original Jack Ryan in THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER)and Harrison Ford(the Jack Ryan in the PATRIOT GAMES and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER)and enter--a different Jack Ryan. A Jack Ryan who is young and was around before THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER,PATRIOT GAMES,and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER were released.Ryan,of course,is a married man,and is a young CIA agent. Did you ever think that being with the CIA would be stressful? If so,you were right, because this time, the first time around(if the Jack Ryan films would have been made in order, this would have been first,THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER would have been second,PATRIOT GAMES would have been third, and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER would have been the one that came out in 2002)it turns out that the President of Russia has died. The man who takes over for him is a man with a cryptic past, and as a result, the CIA begins suspecting that Russian scientists are developing nuclear weapons. And once the suspicians become harder, the action is in full effect. And what does that mean? That means that Jack Ryan himself(who is portrayed by Ben Affleck in this film)has to team up with the director of the CIA,William Cabot(Morgan Freeman)to follow the terrorists' path, which is a deadly trail that leads to a fast paced, edge of your seet movie.
THE SUM OF ALL FEARS,while I will always consider it to be the weakest of the four Jack Ryan films,was/is,in my opinion,a pretty good film. The story for this film and the script are both really good, and while the film may seem a little disturbing at times,it flows along with the movie--meaning that it's not being disturbing just for the sake of it;it is being disturbing to go along with the story. One reason why I am giving this film four stars instead of five is because it is a four star film overall--but the main reason why I knock off one point here is because of Ben Affleck. Affleck,if you ask me,was a weak choice as Jack Ryan--it's not that Affleck is a bad actor,he just doesn't give the big, tough guy image that Jack Ryan was given to from Tom Clancy,Alec Baldwin, and Harrison Ford. Affleck really does not seem tough at all in this film--the only thing I can think of to why Affleck got this part is because he is(or was when this film was being made, since the whole fiasco between him and Jennifer Lopez is all over with)rich and famous--but really, films and roles like this aren't suited for Ben Affleck. George Clooney or Mark Wahlberg would have been good picks to play Jack Ryan, and either Clooney or Wahlberg should have gotten the part--but I didn't have faith in Ben Affleck when I heard that he was going to be playing Jack Ryan, and I didn't have faith in him when I was watching this film.
Overall,a good film. Def. get/rent THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER,PATRIOT GAMES,and CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER before you see this film, but this film is good and if you are a loyal Jack Ryan/Tom Clancy fan, then you will probably like this film. |

 | On the one hand, I commend the producers for having the guts to make such a film in this post-9/11 world, as the bad guys have considerable success with their evil plan.
On the other hand, Clancy's original story is so twisted and PC-ified that it loses much of the impact of the novel. As for Clancy himself, I looked forward to his commentary, but he is just plain annoying. Stick to writing, Tom. |

 | After Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger were turned into films, Clancy made it clear he hated the movies, and hated Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. This time around, Tom Clancy assumed the role of executive producer to basically make sure the latest Jack Ryan film would not suck.
Like almost all movies that are based on novels, The Sum of All Fears differs quite a bit from the original story. The main storyline is present and situations are recognizable from the book, but dramatic changes do not go unnoticed. Clancy must have come to some sort of agreement with them and to the script, for he had a position which gave him a lot of voice in the end product.
This film is a prequel to the ones that starred Harrison Ford, and taking on the role of a young and unmarried Jack Ryan is none other then the notorious Ben Affleck. Personally, I think he has been the best Ryan so far, and I enjoy Baldwin's work and I am a huge fan of Ford. Affleck looks and delivers his character to how I pictured Ryan in the novels.
Clancy fans will more than likely enjoy or at least find it interesting when a young John Clark shows up in the film as well. Liev Shreiber brings this character to life, and I think he portrays Clark the best out of all the other actors who took on his role.
The film starts by revealing the most immediate threat; a missing nuclear bomb. With a new Russian President just settling into office, Jack Ryan is called in for his analysis and advice for he had earlier researched the new head of state. During a nuclear arms inspection, Ryan discovers scientists, who are capable of building a nuke when working together, are missing. With that information under his wing, Ryan is sent on a cat and mouse chase while trying to gather further intel on the growing threat to National Security. Only, he tracks the bomb back to the east coast in the United States, in a city that the President of the United States is watching a football game in a crowded football stadium . . .
I found the movie an amazing piece of work; the acting, camera shots, editing, how the story unfolded, and the score by Jerry Goldsmith, they all made this film an amazing piece of work. I am now waiting and hoping for another installment in this new Jack Ryan franchise, as long as everyone from this film returns to do another Jack Ryan or John Clark story.
