 | "The Year Without a Santa Claus" has been my favorite Christmas movie since I was about 5 years old (I am now 35 years old, so that's a LONG time!!!). Although it used to played on t.v. each year, I noticed about 10 years ago that it was no longer shown, so I went out and bought a copy for myself - and I make sure to watch it each & every Holiday season.
This movie is done in the "old" animated fashion - with Mickey Rooney playing the voice of Santa Claus. It is about a year where Santa Claus, believing that children just don't care about him anymore, decides that he's canceling his annual sleigh ride - so, of course, he won't be handing out gifts to anyone this year.
Of course, Mrs. Claus will have none of this, so she sets a plan in motion to show Santa just how much he's still loved - but there winds up being several glitches in this plan...
My favorite part is the "fight" between the heat & cold misers -I LOVE the song they sing (although I must say that I like ALL of the music on these old holiday movies).
The ending is wonderful & happy - as they all are. I am trying not to say too much, as I don't want to ruin it for you if you've never seen it... Suffice it to say that it's a great movie for children & adults alike. For us adults, it will bring back many wonderful memories! |

 | The person who draws Rudolph in class has made another review.
THE YEAR WITHOUT A SANTA CLAUS
This movie did not make very much sense, I have to agree with the reviewer who loves wolves and who's popcorn is dead. Ranklin-Bass has made other Christmas movies that are better than this one, so I was dissapointed. TALK ABOUT BOORRIINNG!
RUDOLPH'S SHINY NEW YEAR
Ahh, one of my personal favorites! This movie is about how Rudolph goes out to save baby New Year after he has run away, and saves him just in the nick of time! Extremely cute and well done, this is on my top 5 Christmas Movies list. Although it may seem dumb to adults, it sure keeps me and other kids interested!
NESTER,THE LONG-EARED CHRISTMAS DONKEY
This has to be the cutest Christmas movie I have ever seen! Nester is kind of like Rudolph in a way, because he has problems with a physical fault. Anyways, you have to see this one sometime soon, it is too cute to pass (unless your'e a man, then I understand).

supports the Rudolph

 | This DVD has a wonderful selection of holiday puppet animation. Most people have seen the Santa and Rudolph movies but are unfamiliar with the story of Nestor. This is my favorite Christmas movie. The story of Nestor is a charming Christmas story told from the point of view of an orphaned donkey that must journey to Bethlehem and with the guidance of a cherub learns his oversized ears have a very unique purpose. I highly recommend these shows for anyone who has the Christmas spirit. |

 | I've read a lot of reviews on this movie, and I wonder if anyone is paying attention to the GLARING mistakes and downsides. It's understandable to like it, but I've heard some people say it's perfect! Waaaay off.
I think the goal of making this movie was to make children stay immature forever. First of all, about 65% of the movie is made up of songs. Not good songs that teach valuable life lessons, or ones that suit situations well, but immature songs that are always happy, even in a dangerous situation.
Pretty much everything else about the movie is immature. I mean, I know it's a children's movie, but c'mon! This is like Barney, only without the education!
The animation isn't all that bad. As a matter of fact, it's rather charming. But to make up for it, there is a huge lack of character development and bad plot quality, and one GAPING plothole.
You see, the two elves who can be considered the main characters in the movie are introduced pretty early on, but it isn't made clear for a while that they're going to be important characters at all (As a matter of fact, I only expected them to show up in one scene!). This is extremely rare for a children's movie, and pretty bad, too.
The rest of the characters lack development as well, but let's move on to the plot. It's okay, but it seems to flip-flop all around. One minute, Santa is so sick he can't get out of bed, and the next, he's flying thousands of miles on a single reindeer. One minute, a kid has himself convinced that Santa's fake, the next, he's 100 percent certain he exists.
Now, that plothole...you see, Jingle Bells and Jangle Bells rode a young reindeer to a town, and she got sick after a while because the conditions weren't suitable. But Santa rode a reindeer there, as well, and it was fine. You'd be a fool not to notice this error...
Overall, this is a movie to stay away from, and if you do consider watching it, keep in mind that it is severely flawed and about 90% of it is absolutely no fun to watch.
EDIT FROM 7/31/05: So far, there are fifteen unhelpful votes and no helpful votes. Can a review this long and all-covering be like that without major bias going on? Apparently, most of you cannot recognize that reviews are to be rated by how helpful or informative they were for you or how helpful or informative they might be for others. NOT by how much you agree. I covered every little flawed topic of this movie, and so I simply cannot fathom how there would be no helpful votes out of fifteen. Don't be biased, it's unfair to the reviewer. Thank you. |

 | On 'A Year Without Santa Claus' this is BY FAR the most surreal of the Rankin/Bass christmas specials.Santa tries to take a year off, resulting in Mrs.Claus trying to bargain with the Heat and Snow Mizar (two bizzare, showboating characters that more or less steal the show) and mother nature, they're mother. In 'Shiny New Year' Rudolph must locate the deserted Baby New Year named Happy from the 'archapelago of lost years' such as it is and from a bird-like foe called Eon.Trouble is Happy, like Rudolph is possessed of a non-conformity (in Happy's case Dumbo-like ears) that cause him to be laughed at by all he meets. Then upon finding Happy Rudolph explains how he is being laughed with, not at and a happy ending abounds. And Nester?Well that's just a very charming story in Rankin/Bass classic style.I always have saught them out-as I admire that clever animatronic style they use and the clever stories of various misfits finding themselfs at Christmas. These two are the most bizzare but even late in the day they still rock!!!!! |
