SummaryCompetently Done, But Needs More Imagination
Content
You may not find this kind of things interesting, but anyway, here's what happened in Japan, a rather unprecedented case of releasing Hollywood films. Back in autumn 2003 (if I remember correctly) we saw posters and flyers about 'Sinbad,' telling it's coming to theaters soon. We waited, waited, waited for about a year or more, and finally! Here it is! Dreamworks proudly presents ... 'Shark Tale'! Not 'Sinbad'? Where did it go?

Actually, it went straight to DVD in July 2005 (at the same time when 'Shark Tale' was also released as DVD). Hey, what does this mean?

'Sinbad - Legend of the Seven Seas' is not that bad ... at least, not as bad as the Japanese distributor thinks it is. The film is competently done, and the story about two long-separated friends (by John Logan, of 'The Gladiator' fame) is interesting enough. (And as to the story, which is about one stolen 'Book of Peace' and Sinbad's travelling to retrieve it, read previous reviews which have done well.)

However, I can understand the reluctant reaction to the film, for something is clearly missing in this Dreamworks film, and that is inspiration. Don't get mad if you like this film, but if you are an avid animation film fan like me, and have seen the animated films made in America in the past ten years, you know what I'm trying to say. You see bits from this film, bits from that film, borrowed from other animations (mainly of Disney).

Yes, 'Sinbad' is full of adventures, and the hero Sinbad is a bit more comlicated existence than you may expect (voiced by Brad Pitt). The set-pieces are all good, especially the part of the bewitching 'sirens' which is a standout action scene. Plus, the wicked goddess Eris is delightful to see, and obviously Michelle Pfeiffer is having fun, infusing a life into this manipulating lady drawn all in purple when she yells arrogantly, 'Humans are predictable!' I really like it, and in fact, her role and the canine sidekick 'Spike' is more amusing characters than the hero and his love interest voiced by Catherine Zeta Jones

Ultimately, however, 'Sinbad' needs more imagination. Except the big names of vocal talents, everything in this film -- characters, designs, actions -- all look so familiar. Not bad, still, and I like the dog.

SummaryGloriously animated high adventure...a lost art?
Content
If you like high adventure tales, you can't do any better than Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas by Dreamworks Animation. It's a kick to see well known actors reinvented in the animated world. They seem more...well, animated (particularly in this pencil drawn style, that has underservedly lost popularity in recent years). I've never seen Brad Pitt give a more lively performance than as Sinbad. Michelle Pfeiffer's villainous Eris (goddess of Chaos) is sensual and ethereal as she morphs and swirls around the other characters, teasing them into action. Catherine Zeta Jones as Marina is a take-no-baloney heroine who pushes Sinbad to do what's right. They bicker most of the way to Tartarus (the realm of Chaos they are venturing to) and it's obvious they really like each other. But their love-spats only occur between the big adventure sequences, which are wonderful and many in this film. There are sea monsters, water spirits, and a giant snow bird to battle, all just to save Sinbad's friend from losing his head for a crime he didn't commit. After fighting his way to Tartarus, Sinbad, who has lived a life of stealing and adventures for his own gain, is forced to ask himself: what is friendship really worth to him?
This movie is gloriously animated. As I watched it again recently I found myself regretting the computer revolution going on in animation. Those Pixar and PDI films are admittedly good but I love the hand-drawn style too and I hope it doesn't become a lost art. A movie like Sinbad still can't be done as well using that all-computer approach.
Monsters, swashbuckling, romance, and humor await you in this grand, stylishly animated gem. Very highly recommended. Buy it.

SummaryVery enjoyable
Content
4 seconds into the film and that Godess was already my favorite character. The characters have alot of personality, and I was happy to finally see an animated movie done in a more traditional way, without this "CGI" overload garbage (which I hate, by the way.) The scene with the Sirens was very nicely executed. Anyway, find it for a decent price and enjoy.

SummaryA highly underrated animated adventure on DVD!
Content

This is the story of the famed storybook sailor Sinbad who has a crew including a beautiful woman who sail from far oceans, battling many beasts, and have to get a magical sacred book from the super sexy but deadly goddess "Iris".

A wonderful and entertaining animated romp that unfortunately was a dud at the box-office but still is quite a delightful Dreamworks made animated fantasy romp with the voices of Brad Pitt, Catherine Zeta Jones, Michelle Pfiefer and Joseph Fiennes and has some great artwork & CGI effects to blend in with it.

The DVD is quite good with good picture, commentary by the filmmakers, behind the scenes featurettes, a fun game, and art gallery, this is a must have movie if you love animation.
