SummaryWHAT'S LAY-UP, DOC?
Content
"Space Jam" was the first feature-length film with the Looney Tunes characters...or was it a kid's-eye view of the Michael Jordan-era NBA? This mid-'90s release, made when computer animation was new, still seems more than a bit dated. That said, it's a modestly amusing live-action/animated movie, revolving around Jordan's two-year baseball "sabbatical" and his adventures with the "Tune Squad", the world's most unusual basketball team. More a marketing-based pastiche than a story, "Space Jam" has some good sequences (Mr. Swackhammer, a green-slime, cigar-chomping carny boss, and his mini-monster employees; a clever golf bit with Jordan, Larry Bird, and Bill Murray in his "Caddyshack" garb; Bugs and Daffy sneaking into MJ's house) and some bad ones (Patrick Ewing and Charles Barkley losing their power, the toons at practice). As for the basketball game between the Tunes and the no-longer-mini "Mon-stars", it shows some imagination, especially with Hubie and Bertie the mice as P.A. announcers and the final-play sequence involving Murray as a walk-on. I suppose this looked like a slam dunk on release, given how huge Jordan was in the '90s and a time when classic Looney Tunes weren't too easy to find. The animation isn't too slick and some of the jokes are flat, but "Space Jam" is still watchable- a lay-up, if you will. Some of the extras, however, are great, notably the four newer Looney Tunes on Disc 2. An aging Chuck Jones gamely reprises his classic "One Froggy Evening" storyline on "Another Froggy Evening"; the Roman "Saladus Caesar" bit is good. The others, created by Greg Ford, come very close to the originals in humor and timing, especially "Night Of The Living Duck"- see Daffy croon in an all-monster nightclub, dubbed by, of all people, the late Mel Torme! There's also an extended "Bugs and Daffy's Video Stars"- overlong, badly mixed at times, but still a collection of old-school (and very old-school) Warner musical clips going back to the '20s. Overall, if you're a Looney Tunes completist or old Jordan fan, you'll probably like this a little. But I'd go with the "Back In Action" movie, which at least is more original and genuinely funny in spots. Of course, the fabulous
"Golden Collection" sets are the greatest...that's all, folks!

SummaryI'd Give It Zero Stars.
Content
How could they? How could the masters of animation do this? Poor Friz Freleng, poor Bob McKimson, poor Tex Avery, poor Ben Hardaway, poor Bob Clampett, poor Frank Tashlin, and poor Mel Blanc. They must be rolling over in their graves right now. As for poor Chuck Jones, he probably cried when he saw this, for his wonderful characters were ruined, even Sniffles. The reasons why I hated this mess of a movie:

1. Everyone is out of character. Bugs Bunny, the reasonable, smart rabbit you knew from the cartoons is now a helpless, stupid little girl. Daffy Duck, the cantankerous, off-the-wall duck we loved from the cartoons is now a bumbling, try-hard idiot. And WHO ever heard of Marvin Martian FLYING?!?! HE CAN'T FLY! And he isn't even an earthling, so why is HE kicking some alien tail? Tweety, the smart canary who would always keep himself out of a puddy tat's stomach in a usually violent yet funny manner is now a "South Park"-esque character with a REALLY BAD voice. Elmer Fudd, the hapless hunter who would always have the hunted get the best of him is now what Bugs Bunny is supposed to be. Also, more than half of all of the characters are not in the stadium but in the audience.

2. The Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies apparently live in a hole in the ground. Oh sure. The ONLY Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies characters who would do THAT are Bugs Bunny, The Goofy Gophers, Sniffles, Speedy Gonzales and company. If you were birds like Roadrunner, Beaky Buzzard, Tweety, and Daffy Duck, "HOME SWEET HOME" would be somewhere else, wouldn't it be? Or a human, cat, pig, a skunk, a coyote... THEY would choose to live in houses, barns, bushes, or the desert.

3. The Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies are HARDLY in the movie at all. There are WAY too many scenes with the human actors instead. It took such a long time for the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies to appear onscreen, I was even doubtful that they were even going to be IN the movie AT ALL. It just feels like they are just making what seems like a bunch of long cameos. IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A LOONEY, MERRIE, TOONY, MELODIE OF A MOVIE, AND IT CAN'T BE WHEN THERE ARE TOO MANY HUMAN ACTORS!!!!

4. The original Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies had violence that was meant to be funny, but now, there's horrid, gross humor that Bob Clampett would NEVER use in his cartoons. In one scene, one of the Monstars squishes poor Sniffles to death and Sniffles' eyes pop out. Absolutely disgusting. Leon Schlesinger would die of shame if he were still alive.

Overall, this was a very disgusting film and I was very disappointed. See the original toons, the webtoons, and "Back In Action" and avoid this like the plague.

SummaryCould Have Been Better, Could Have Been Worse
Content
As a long time lover of the Looney Tunes, I had to have this movie. I must admit to a bit of dissapointment in that the cartoon charaters were NOT all that they could have been. It seems like the glory days of Warner Bros. is really over. That being said, it was still an entertaining movie.

The premise involves a theme part from another planet that wants to capture the "toons" to bring in more customers. Bugs and company notice that the aliens sent to get them are all very short and gawky and challenge them to a basketball game. The aliens manage to steal the talent of NBA stars and grow to huge proportions. The toons need help so Michael Jordan is drafted from his baseball career to save the day. Anyone who has ever seen a sports movie can guess how it turns out but the point is the twists and turns along the way.

Another commentator said that these toons are pale imitations of their predecessors. THat person was right. Still its better than nothing and it was a fun movie.
