 | Sky High is a film that will undoubtedly be on many families shelves once it is released on DVD. It is wholesome fun, in the way that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is. In other words, it's not a cheesy rip-off of a movie that is targeted only at young kids. Heck no! This film is for the whole family (and even if you don't have kids you'll likely enjoy this fantasy).
Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston are the Commander and Jetstream - the greatest superhero the world has ever known. They have conquered the greatest threats to mankind. Their real identies are not known to the public at large (nod to Superman, that the Commander's only disguise is a pair of glasses). Their son, Will, is getting ready to start at the same high school his parents attented (the same school where all superheros go to school): Sky High. Whereas, a typical high school has a class structure based on "jock", "geek", and "freak (doper)", Sky High's class structure exists based on "superhero" and "sidekick" - and you reallllly don't want to be a sidekick.
Unfortunately, Will's not displaying any powers...yet, so he becomes a sidekick. And the torture and torment begin, so does the humor.
Really an expanded morality play, Sky High is a very humorous and clever romp that is not too heavy handed in its message and not too heavy handed in the special effects - oh, there are quite a few, but they're not of the Jurassic Park or Terminator level. This is a Disney production and it is intended to be wholesome family entertainment. It delivers that.
Look for some really clever cameos and some hilarious "super" powers: a boy who can melt into a puddle and a girl who can shape shift.....uh, but only into a....guinea pig.
The villain is never terribly terrifying, but will entertain kids and adults alike. The humor and general feeling is more Batman television series circa 1960's than X Men big screen circa 2004.
Go out and see this and when it hits DVD - buy it! You'll love it. |

 | It's the same as any other disney comedy. Oh I'm sorry, did I say comedy? They had many so-called "jokes" that were seriously overused. It's like the people don't know good movies anymore. |

 | Will Stronghold is the son of the most famous superhero couple in the world. There are strong expectations for him at Sky High, but Will is worried since he doesn't seem to exhibit super powers like his peers. How is he to measure up to his classmates?
With fantasy, sci-fi and super-hero films becoming very popular nowadays, it's no surprise that Sky High is part of the next installment. Pre-teens and young ones will definitely enjoy this movie: it has all the classic elements of high school conflict but with superpowers. A keeper for the kids collection.

 | Where do the children of superheroes go to school? To Sky High, of course! Will Stronghold (played by Michael Angarano of TV's "Will and Grace") is the son of the world's two greatest and most popular heroes, Commander (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream (Kelly Preston). Unfortunately for Will, as the first day of school arrives at his parent's alma mater, his powers have yet to be manifested. With his friend Layla, who has the unique ability to control plant life, he meets a group of friends whose powers are less than stellar and becomes a part of the "sidekicks", hero support being the more politically correct term for those people who don't quite cut it as actual heroes!
The story pretty much deals with the typical problems in high school---peer pressure, making friends, the beginnings of romance, trying to fit in---all at a school where kids can freeze each other, lift cars and exhibit lots of other interesting powers!
Since this is a superhero movie there must be a villian and we see relativily quickly that the villain has targeted Will Stronghold and his super parents. The showdown at the end of the movie will show us whether or not Will can live up to the heroic heritage that is being passed to him.
The actors have a lot of fun with their roles, including Lynda Carter (TV's Wonder Woman) as Principal Powers, Bruce Cambell as Coach Boomer and two former Kids in the Hall comedians, David Foley and Kevin McDonald. And in a small, but funny turn, Cloris Leachman plays the school nurse. Steven Strait plays an interesting character named Warren Peace, the child of a super villain and a super hero!
If you are looking for a fun family movie that you can take EVERYONE to, this is it. There is no bad language and the story has a good message concerning being yourself and the importance of friendship. Check this movie out, you won't be disappointed!

 | Sky High is like a typical teen high school movie plus all the super powers. It has its good scenes and some pretty bad ones. Some of the action sequences look like they can out of an episode of Mighty Mophine Power Rangers. On a plus side the supporting cast is the best part. Bruce Campbell and Lynda Carter - genious. Though a little predictable for adults, it's still cute. |
