SummaryA superb melodrama!
Content
Those late seventies were so turbulent and depressive that the same show business looked insight the soul and spirit of the most of people. Somehow this decade constituted to the American Cinema what the late Fifties to the French people. We don't talk a true New Wave literally speaking but a reencounter with the roots of the human being. Watch for the winner titles in those ages: Melvin and Howard, Julia, Annie Hall, People like one, The verdict, Deer Hunter and obviously this one .
It was necessary to adapt to the screen this simple story because the family as institution was experiencing an evident disintegration process, that was one of the multiple consequences of an existential, emotional and ethic disarrange.
The film shows us many common places about the custody of a son product of an unhappy separation and all the efforts of a father in search of his son's love.
Brilliant performances and notable direction.

SummarySniff~
Content
That this over-hyped, self-indulgent '70's tripe won Best Picture over "Apocalypse Now", is a damning indictment on the Academy.

In a nutshell: we have an 'unfulfilled' woman/mom (see, we have to be careful about honoring distinctions -- everyone knows that a 'woman' cannot be satisfied by simply being a 'mom'), and an inattentive, job-driven husband. Oh yeah, there's the kid, in bad need of a haircut, who the unlikable parents spar over after suddenly realizing their parental obligations.

Cherubic Streep (mom), suddenly blows the domestic scene 'cuz she ain't happy, or fulfilled, or whatever the heck is bothering her. Geez, it MUST be mighty serious, to abandon her child and all. But let's go back in time -- two words -- self-fulfillment.

Dustin ham-handedly takes on single-parenthood, and while falling woefully short of the mark (well, he was ABANDONED by his wife), discovers that parental duties are actually a part of
being a parent.

Cherubic Meryl, after a period of 'self-examination,' returns to take custody of the little hippy.

How does it end? Great Zeus, who gives a hoot?

This is soapy, pitiful stuff. The 70's wrought few fine movies, but that "Apocalypse" lost to "Kramer" is a fitting epitaph for that awful decade.

SummaryA Pretty Funny Movie
Content
I watched Kramer vs. Kramer and came away laughing during most of the movie.
I have never seen people take themselves so seriously, trapped in a land of esoteric garble.

Hoffman's character, Ted, needs to grow some balls, and learn how to make coffee, as he is over the age of 40. Streep's character needs to refill her Prozac script and start reading Sylvia Plath, maybe that would make her somewhat interesting.

The most hilarious line was in the coutroom when Streep's character said:

" Ted was unable to deal with my feelings and this lowered my self-esteem. I've worked very hard to be a whole human being. And I don't think I should be punished for that."

Woe is me! How is this idiotic woman being punished! Being forced to move from the Upper West side to the Upper East side or maybe the real punishment was switching from Espresso to Maxwell House coffee?
Oh, The Humanity of it ALL!!!!

And the child doesn't need his parents: he needs six to ten years of special ed.

SummaryMeryl Streep first Academy Award Win
Content
I am writing this review since I am a big Meryl Streep fan. I had never since this movie complete and since I just bought her AFI Tribute package, so I started with this one, an must-see for every Meryl Streep fan.
The movie basicly is a Family Drama in which Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) is left with his 6-year old son (Justin Henry) by his wife Joanna (Meryl Streep) because she feels that something is missing in her life and she feels trap.
The performances are great and you can feel both parents' love for the child and somehow you are torn trying to understand Joanna (how she can left her child but also how she felt lost).
This movie won 5 Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman) and Best Supporting Acctress (Streep, includes a nice Documentary about the movie that includes insights from the Director, Producers and Cast, a must-have for any Streep, Hoffman or Family Drama fans.

SummaryThe tables turn: the hubby's abandoned!
Content
This is a good movie. It unfolds with a wife's decision to leave her marriage. She leaves not only her husband but also their son. The husband has difficulties in coping with the new separation, taking on not only the father role but also the mother's.

This movie would be ideal viewing for persons interested in custody battles, law-related, parenting, single parents, and any and all persons interested in what it means to leave a family and to also have to confront the consequences that follow.

Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep give a good performance. This is a movie that hits home. Typically, this is what happens when a husband leaves; now the wife leaves and the husband is abandoned, having to raise a son by himself.
