Welsh writer and veteran TV broadcaster Mavis Nicholson had been on television for two and a half decades when she made her last appearance in 1997's “Oldie TV.” The host of such shows as her debut “Good Afternoon,” “Afternoon Plus” and “Mavis On Four,” she had conducted interviews with such artists as Elizabeth Taylor and David Bowie. Nicholson is the author of 1992's “Martha Jane & Me : A Girlhood In Wales” and 2007's “Bit On The Side, Work, Sex, Love, Loss And Own Goals.”

A loyal wife, Nicholson and late husband Geoff were married for nearly five decades when he passed away in 2001. She is the mother of 3.

Mavis Nicholson was born on October 19, 1930, in Briton Ferry, Wales. She was happily married to husband Geoff until his death in 2001 from colon cancer. They had been together for almost 50 years. Mavis and her husband, whom she met at university, had three sons.


Martha Jane & Me : A Girlhood In Wales

Career:

Mavis Nicholson started her broadcasting career in 1972 with the show “Good Afternoon.” For the next 25 years, she became a regular presence on television. Among her many credits include “Afternoon Plus” and “Mavis On Four.” Nicholson did her last television work in 1997 for “Oldie TV,” a television version of The Oldie Magazine, which she still writes for. During her glory days, Nicholson interviewed a number of top celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and David Bowie.

In addition to TV, Nicholson has hosted numerous radio shows. Among them are a history of the department store and a look back at her childhood in Tiger Bay. Also an author, the veteran broadcaster published the book “Martha Jane & Me : A Girlhood In Wales” in 1992. Her new book, “Bit On The Side, Work, Sex, Love, Loss And Own Goals,” was published by Parthian Books on March 8, 2007. It depicts her last precious year with beloved husband Geoff, who died of colon cancer in 2001, and how she still learning to adjust to life without him.
