 | I finally watched it tonight and it wasnt as bad as everyone made it out to be. I mean it wasnt the best movie and not the funniest but I think that it was a pretty good comedy. I admit it couldve been a little bit funnier but hey it still was good. Marcia Gay Harden, Maura Tierney, and Reagan Pasternak are hot. |

 | What happens when a popular 2 term president moves to a small town and runs for mayor against a plumber? What happens are laughs. When the president's ex wife takes an active interest in the campaign on the side of the plumber, the laughs get even better. When both candidates are trying to date the town veterinarian they come even faster.
This is a silly comedy with a lot of hear and a lot of fun. By the end of it, you might even find yourself admiring two politicians. That takes some doing!
Treat yourself to something enjoyable before the next election cycle!

 | "Welcome to Mooseport" even bombed in Maine!
I guess I should have been tipped off to how thoroughly bad this movie is when I walked into a theater last fall in Falmouth, Maine, and was one of only three or four people in the audience. I've never come as close to walking out of a movie as I did with "Mooseport." What a letdown!
This story could have been a fun premise in the hands of a competent scriptwriter and director. They certainly had the acting talent from which to draw (i.e., Gene Hackman). But the result is a lifeless, insipid little trifle that -- as an inflight airline movie now --probably has most travellers reaching for their evacuation procedures flyer to break the tedium and boredom.
There's nothing in the movie that's uniquely Maine, uniquely small town, or uniquely amusing. This Romano fellow -- is he supposed to be funny? I guess this is what passes for comedy these days on television.
If you buy "Mooseport" in VHS, make sure you get the cassette with the plastic clip intact, so you can re-record over it and possibly get some further use out of what will prove to be a one-time viewing experience.
(I did enjoy the scene where "Popeye" Doyle chases the heroin smuggler down the Brooklyn elevated, however.)

 | Let's see, two Oscar winners, a successful comedian with a hit show, this would work, right? Wrong! DEAD WRONG! This movie is a bust from the very beginning opening sequence with the streaking jogger! This film was not funny at all. The only sequence that gave me a chuckle was the golfing match where Romano is counting the strokes. Other than that this movie was a huge disappoinment! They could have done so much with the material if they had a funnier script and more moose. Give a big thumbs down to the director Donald Petrie, who was wrong in the development and execution of the film. This film could have used Mel Brooks or even Carl Reiner at the helm. Overall, stay away from this film! |
| Rating | | | Date | March 28, 2005 | | Summary | What do you do with a president | Content
 | when he stops being a president? You run him for mayor of Moosehead. Gene Hackman is the "Eagle" a wildly popular president leaving office. Hackman can do this part in his sleep. He is prevailed upon, reluctantly, to run against local bumpkin, Handy, played by Ray Romano. He doesn't want to be mayor either but feels honor bound. Ramono should stick to stand-up comedy in the future. The president also "bird dogs" Handy's girlfriend, a vet, he's been dating for six years. She goes out with the president. Handy doesn't have a clue but is jealous, paranoid & neurotic about the whole thing. Hackman breezes through his part, a sleazy but likable politician, & Romano ad-libs a lot as the town's dim but loveable plumber. Who wins the mayor race? I'm sure some other reviewer will tell you if you want to know before you see it. Yeah, it's preety stupid but better than expected & I can sqeeze out ***, thanks to the excellent supporting cast of Marcia Gay Hardin, Maura Tierney & good old, reliable Rip Torn. Plenty of outtakes, deleted scenes, etc. on the dvd. |
