Director of Good Dick
Scottish import Marianna Palka is probably most known as the director, writer and producer of the Sundance-screened “Good Dick” (2008), which received the Grand Jury Prize nomination at the prestigious festival. She is also the producing partner of actor Jason Ritter. Arriving in the United States at age 17, the former student of The Atlantic Theater Company has appeared in two episodes of “Derek and Simon: The Show” (2007) and the 2001 film “Earth Day” (2001, voiced Gail).
5' 10½” Palka is the best friend of costume designer Daphne Javitch. She cites actor/writer/director Peter Mullan as her mentor.
Childhood and Family:
Marianna Bronislawa Barbara Palka, whose nickname is Manch or Manchie, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on September 7, 1981, to Basia and Tadeusz Palka, both of whom suffer Huntington's Disease. Along with her sister, Nina, who is three years her senior, she grew up in Scotland, where her family ran the successful bag company Ralka Bags throughout the 1980s. She relocated to New York at age 17 to study acting at The Atlantic Theater Company. Young Marianna used to live without television in Scotland.
Co-creator of Morning Knight
Scotland-born Marianna Palka moved to the United States when she was 17 years old to study acting at New York's Atlantic Theater Company. After serving as production intern on the Kevin Spacey/Danny DeVito vehicle “The Big Kahuna” (1999) and the Gary Winick-directed “Sam the Man” (2000), she provided the voice of Gail in the film “Earth Day” (2001), which was jointly directed and written by Michiko Byers and Meredith Casey. The film also featured the voices of actor Mark Hamill (as Dr. Bob) and producing partner Jason Ritter (as Jack).
Palka went on to appear in front of the cameras as an actress in two episodes of the short-lived comedy “Derek and Simon: The Show” (2007). There she played a character named Sophie. However, she did not hit the big time until 2008. Through Morning Knight Inc., a production company she formed with Jason Ritter, Palka made her debut as director, producer and writer with “Good Dick,” featuring Tom Arnold, Martin Starr, Mark Webber and others in addition to Ritter and Palka herself. The film received a nomination at the Sundance Film Festival for the Grand Jury Prize (Dramatic).
