 | Let me tell you what's good about this movie: everything. I think this movie is quite singular in that it is a (laugh out loud) comedy, a credible romance, and a pretty frigging awesome mystery thriller all in one. It has excellent acting from everyone involved (from Beasly the Dog and Tom Hanks to Craig T Nelson). Tom Hanks makes acting opposite dog look absolutely easy - and you know it must be totally difficult.
For me this flick is up there with the Goonies, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, and that as a classic. It might be easy to just write this off as a stupid 80's flick starring a bunch of (at the time) B-list actors, but this movie is special.
Amd I have to say that romantic comedies do absolutely nothing for me; on the rare occaision that i must watch one i generally loathe them, but the romantic bits in this film - though brief - come off as so real.. so genuine that it really gets me. Tom and Mare Winningham have SO much chemistry on screen together. You watch their relationship develop over the course of the film and it is just so touching. Their eyes meeting.. the subtlety of a silent moment passing between them. Maybe it's just me. If you've never seen this flick, you simply must. It is great. |

 | This Tom Hanks and Beasley The Dog movie from 1989 has always been a great movie to watch for it's wonderful story about man's best friend. It's great to see the relationship between the Hanks character and Hooch develop during the movie, from Hanks being at odds with Hooch's slobbering ways to eventually becoming his best friend and partner against crime. Like another great canine film, Old Yeller, the ending is a sad but ultimately happy one. Rent a copy of this under-appreciated classic. |

 | Parents, I would strongly suggest pre-viewing this movie before allowing your younger children to see this movie. Near the begining of the movie, two people are murdered; and while you don't "see" it, you can hear it. You also get to see Scott Turner (actor Tom Hanks) running around in his underwear. Plus there are two or three sexually suggestive scenes - one is a very heavily suggestive scene.
If you could cut those scenes out, this would be a great film. You just have to love the mastiff playing Hooch, and the scenes where the dog is destroying things is just plain funny! |
