The Hunger Games

Background:

“One of the biggest inspirations before I started shooting came from my brother, when he texted me and said, 'Hey, fatty, it's called 'The Hunger Games', not 'The Eating Games'. So I started working out a lot more and eating a lot less.” Liam Hemsworth

Australian actor Liam Hemsworth first became famous in his native country through his performances as Josh Taylor in the soap opera “Neighbours” (2007-2008) and as Marcus on the children's television series “The Elephant Princess” (2008-2009) before making transformation to international movie star with the box office hit drama “The Last Song” (2010), where he played the boyfriend of Miley Cyrus. The role brought the handsome actor the Teen Choice Award and several nominations. Hemsworth attained even more popularity and recognition after playing Gale Hawthorne in the Gary Ross film adaptation of “The Hunger Games” (2012). He picked up two MTV Movie nominations for his fine acting.

In addition to reprising his role as Gale Hawthorne in the 2013 sequel “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” Hemsworth will star in other upcoming movies like “Love and Honor” (2012), “The Expendables 2” (2012), “Empire State” (2013), “Paranoia” (2013), “Timeless” (2013) and “Arabian Nights” (2014).

Hemsworth began dating the Nashville, Tennessee born actress and singer Miley Cyrus in June 2009 on the set of “The Last Song.” The couple reportedly separated in August 2010, but reconciled later in summer 2011. They split up again in early November but have since rekindled their relationship. On June 6, 2012, Hemsworth and Cyrus announced that  they were engaged. He proposed his popular girlfriend with a 3.5-carat diamond ring on May 31.

Hemsworth is a philanthropist, and becomes the ambassador of the Australian Childhood Foundation.

“I have the best parents you can have. They have worked in child protection for twenty years and have only ever given me encouragement and support. The world is a scary enough place as it is for children. It is important that home should always be a safe place for them.” Liam Hemsworth (about his affiliation with the foundation).

Hemsworth was considered one of the 55 faces of the future by Nylon Magazine's Young Hollywood Issue. He mentions Leonardo DiCaprio, Heath Ledger, and Paul Newman his favorite actors, while his favorite films include “The Goonies” (1985), “James Dean” (2001, (TV), “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” (2006), “The Departed” (2006) and “Step Brothers” (2008).

Career:

Liam Hemsworth launched his acting career at the age of 17 with guest appearances in the Australian soap operas “Home and Away” (Seven Network) and “McLeod's Daughters” (Nine Network). However, he did not receive recognition and fame until he was cast as Josh Taylor, a paraplegic athlete and love interest for Bridget Parker, on the long running soap “Neighbours,” a role he played from October 29, 2007 to August 26, 2008.

Hemsworth gained further attention in Australia when he landed the regular role of Marcus,  the appealing lead guitarist of the protagonist's band, on the Network Ten children's television series “The Elephant Princess.” He played the role during its first season from November 2008 to April 2009. In January/February 2009, Hemsworth had a two episodic role as Marc on the acclaimed television drama series  “Satisfaction” (Showcase, 2007-2010).

After leaving “The Elephant Princess,” Hemsworth kicked off his screen career with a minor role as an MIT student named Spencer on the American/British science fiction movie “Knowing” (2009), directed by Alex Proyas and starring Nicolas Cage. Despite mixed reviews, the film was a commercial success by grossing a total of  $187,858,642 worldwide on a budget of $50 million. Later that same year, Hemsworth co-starred with Melissa George and Rachael Carpani on the British/Australian psychological horror flick “Triangle,” which was critically successful but was not a financial success.

Still in 2009, Hemsworth was chosen to appear with Sylvester Stallone in Stallone's 2010 film, “The Expendables.” However, his character was written out of the script. Not long after the setback,  Hemsworth received a call from director Kenneth Branagh to test for the lead role on the 2011 film “Thor.” He then relocated to the United States in March 2009 for the screen tests. Hemsworth finally lost the part to his brother Chris, but he did score his breakthrough role of Will Blakelee in the coming of age teen drama “The Last Song” (2010), based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. Directed by Julie Anne Robinson in her feature film directorial debut and co-scripted by Sparks and Jeff Van Wie, the film earned negative reviews from critics but performed well at the box office. Made on a budget of $20 million, it grossed $89,041,656 worldwide. For his turn as a popular and skilled beach volleyball player and Ronnie (played by Miley Cyrus)'s love interest, Hemsworth won a Teen Choice for Choice Movie Breakout Male, and with Cyrus, he also shared Teen Choice nominations for Choice Movie: Chemistry, Choice Movie: Dance and Choice Movie: Liplock as well as Kids' Choice nominations for Blimp Award's Cutest Couple and Favorite Kiss.

Recently, in 2012, Hemsworth was cast as Gale Hawthorne, a strong supporter of Katniss Everdeen and her closest friend, in “The Hunger Games,” a science fiction film adaptation of the Suzanne Collins 2008 bestseller novel of the same name. Helmed by Gary Ross, the film was met with a generally good reception from critics and enjoyed a massive success at the box office. “The Hunger Games” has made $404,864,651 in North America and $275,819,878 in other countries, for a worldwide total of $680,684,529. It is currently the 50th highest-grossing film of all time. Hemsworth netted MTV Movie nominations in the categories of Breakthrough Performance and Best Cast for his work on the film.

Hemsworth has completed filming the main role of Mickey Wright on the upcoming war/drama film “Love and Honor,” directed by Danny Mooney. It will be released in the US later in 2012 and in the Netherlands on February 14, 2013. He will play Bill 'The Kid' Timmons on Stallone's sequel “The Expendables 2,” which is due to be released on August 17, 2012, by Lions Gate Entertainment.

In 2013, Hemsworth is set to co-star with Emma Roberts and Dwayne Johnson on the drama film “Empire State,” which is for a June 10 release, with Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman in the big screen adaptation of Joseph Finder's novel, “Paranoia,” which is scheduled to release on September 27, and with Kelsey Brown in the Phillip Noyce helmed drama “Timeless,” where he will star as a widower who travels back in time. Besides, he will reprise his Gale Hawthorne role in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” the sequel to “The Hunger Games,” which is set to be released in November 2013.

In 2014, Hemsworth will portray Ali Baba in the upcoming action/adventure film “Arabian Nights,” directed and written by Chuck Russell. Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Hopkins are rumored to take part in the film.
