All the Things She Said

Background:

Russian singer and songwriter Lena Katina rose to prominence as a member of the popular duo t.A.T.u., along with bandmate Yulia Volkova. Formed in 1999, the duo went on to become one of the most successful pop music acts in Russia and produced hits like “All the Things She Said,” “Not Gonna Get Us” and “All About Us” before eventually splitting up in 2011, when the girls focused on their own solo careers. Katina began her solo career in 2009. Her single “Never Forget” (2011) reached No. 1 on the MTV Russia Top 10 and also won the 2011 MTV Russia for Video Of The Year.  The song also became a chart topper on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play.

Katina is married to Slovenian musician Sash Kuzma. She has various hobbies such as figure skating, artistic gymnastics, ballroom dancing, horseback-riding and swimming. She also enjoys reading, especially romance novels, and is a proficient pianist. When she was young, Katina was a fan of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd.

Elena Sergeevna

Childhood and Family:

Elena Sergeevna Katina, who would later be popular as Lena Katina, was born on October 4, 1984, in Moscow, RSFSR, USSR (now Russia), to parents Katin Sergey Vasilevich and Katina Inessa Vsevolodovna. Her father is a famous musician who has collaborated with “Dyuna,” Marina Khlebnikova and other representatives of Russian show-business. She has a younger half sister named Katya and a younger half brother named Ivan.

Lena started to enter various sport and music clubs at 4, in order to further plastic arts and artistic talents. She attended music school for piano classes when she was older, and by age 10, she had joined the noted children group Avenue as a soloist. After leaving Avenue, 13 year old Lena joined the vocal and instrumental group Neposedi (Naughty Children), but soon quit because of her age. At 15, she became a member of the music duo t.A.T.u., along with Yulia Volkova whom she met while in Avenue.

After dating for three years, Lena married her boyfriend Sash Kuzma (Sasha Kuzmanović), in Moscow and Ljubljana in August 2013.

Never Forget

Career:

In 1999, 15 year old Lena Katina was selected as a member of t.A.T.u. after beating out 400 girls in audition. Some time afterward, 14 year old Yulia Volkova joined at the lineup. While still alone, Katina had the chance to record demos such as “Belochka” and “Yugoslavia.”

As a duo, t.A.T.u. started to gain popularity in Russia in 2001. Their first studio album, “200 Po Vstrechnoy,”  which was released by Interscope on May 21, 2001, received platinum in both Poland and Europe. On December 10, 2002, Katina and her group released their first English album, “200 km/h in the Wrong Lane,” which was a charting success in many countries like the US (#13), the UK (#12), Germany (#3), Canada (#3), France (#8), Austria (#1), Switzerland (#5), Sweden (#14) and Australia (#19). The album debut single, “All the Things She Said” (2002), reached No. 1 in the UK, Switzerland, Ireland, Germany, Australia and Austria and hit the US Billboard Hot 10 at No. 20, making it the first and only single from the group to enter the chart. The album also spawned the popular singles “Not Gonna Get Us” and “How Soon Is Now?.”

In 2004, Katina and Volkova parted ways with their manager Ivan Shapovalov and came clean from a previous lesbian image created by Shapovalov. The girls returned with their second English album, “Dangerous and Moving,” on October 10, 2005, and their next Russian album, “Lyudi Invalidy,” on October 21, 2005. “Dangerous and Moving” produced three singles with “All About Us,” “Friend or Foe” and “Gomenasai.”

In 2007, Katina, along with Yulia Volkova, was cast in a film “You and I,” with Mischa Barton playing the lead role. The film was helmed by Roland Joffe and was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. It was released in Russia later on January 25, 2011.

t.A.T.u. released their third Russian Album, “Vesyolye Ulybki,” on October 21, 2008. The third English album “Waste Management” followed on December 15, 2009. Their single, “Snowfalls” (2009), failed to chart in any music charts internationally.

In 2009, Katina began to pursue solo career, and has recorded in various locations like Los Angeles, New York and Moscow. This forced t.A.T.u. to go on hiatus. The group eventually disbanded in March 2011 due to embarked on solo careers.

On May 30, 2010, Katina made her solo debut performance at the Troubador in Los Angeles. She became the opening act of PrideFest in Milwaukee on June 12, 2010. During this time, she launched a free download of a song from her upcoming album called “Lost in this Dance.” Still in 2010, she recorded a song with Canadian post-hardcore band, Abandon All Ships, called “Guardian Angel.” The song was included on the band's 2010 debut album “Geeving.”

Katina was scheduled to perform at the XLV Party in Dallas, Texas Cotton Bowl on February 3, with The Village People, Cazwell, Lady Bunny, DJ Hector Fonseca and DJ Enferno. However, due to low ticket sales, the concert was eventually canceled in January.

On August 4, 2011, Katina released the single “Never Forget,” which was produced by Sven Martin and Erik Lidbom. The song received positive response, claiming No. 1 in MTV Russia, and also topped the US Hot Dance Club Play for one week. On September 19, 2011, Katina released a new song, “Waiting.” It was followed by a new song, “Keep On Breathing,” which was released through Kroogi on December 9, 2011. Katina also collaborated with Mexican synthpop band Belanova and shot a video for the song they recorded together titled “Tic Toc” (2011).

In 2012, Katina worked with T-Killah on a song called “Shot,” which was included on the rapper's album “BOOM .” The Russian version of the song “Ya Budu Ryadom” was released in April 2013. Katina also collaborated with other artists like Clark Owen in “Melody” and Sergio Galoyan in “Paradise.”

In December 2013, Katina moved to Los Angeles to work on a limited edition triple CD for release in early 2013 and a Spanish language EP.
