 | I went to see this movie expecting to find an entertaining movie and that's exactly what I found. It is the story of a boy who is the son of the two world greatest superheroes...but who doesn't have any powers himself. When he starts attending the high school for superheroes he will discover who he is and what a superhero is really about.
Don't expect to find a great plot in this movie (for most part it is pretty predictable). But the story is nice and the message is clear (I don't want to give more spoilers here...). This is just a movie to watch and relax. But if you are only expecting that, then you'll really enjoy it!
The acting was good, and the movie overall was pretty funny, but don't expect deep dialogues. I would recommend it for the whole family. Adults and kids will probably have fun! Although the movie has some scenes of violence, they are not worse than those in the Harry Potter movies.

 | Don't listen to the gushers. This movie is merely okay. It's not a great superhero movie and certainly not worthy of comparison to Harry Potter or Spy Kids.
However, it is a little fun so I give it three stars.
Here is my nitpicky problem with it (it contains some spoilers, although you will probably see these things coming whether you read the following or not):
The popular kids turn out to be villians. What a suprise. Well, it does aspire to be a cartoony adventure film but why set it in high school if you aren't going to look at it in a new way? A year or two ago the movie Mean Girls was very clever about puncturing the old high school status quo and explaining why popular kids appear to be such jerks. In this movie, they are just secret supervillians who hijack the homecoming dance and zap the adults into submission leaving the unpopular kids to save the day.
The young hero of the story is poised to join the popular crowd, but it plays out like a puritan morality play saying "beware of high school popularity."
The movie does play with high school conventions a little bit. The bad boy (modeled after Judd Nelson in Breakfast Club?) turns out to be nice at heart. You see it coming. I sort of hoped they might explain more about him. How did his mom fall for a supervillian? That might have been an interesting story.
The movie ends on a note where the "hero support" students (sidekicks) are given credit for saving the day. Except the kid who is good at science is still a villian. The fact that she's a popular hottie just affirms teen movie wisdom that popular kids are almost always suspect. They always have their priorities out of wack, focusing too much on popularity, looks, or taking over the world...It would have been nice if there was one popular Ferris Bueller rebel or a popular but still good at heart Lindsay Lohan heroine among them....Oh, well. |
| Rating | | | Date | August 08, 2005 | | Summary | Could have bee Great, but Why Care? | Content
 | Here is a movie that could have been a great film! But of course, why should we care about these characters? We are never given enough introduction to these people as HUMAN BEINGS before we are thrust into an unbelievable world of imitation superman and superwoman knocking down a robot that obstructs traffic on the "daily commute" telecast. The robot falls conveniently in a nicely located that does NO DAMAGE whatsoever to surrounding buildings or anything important.
The perspective of the son of "superman who cannot fly" and "superwoman who flies and does martial arts only" could have been better used, but the dialogue is camp and teh bare essentials.
With better direction and a longer, filled-in script this could have been a fantastic movie. So many things are simply thrown at us (albeit sometimes very well done) that we are never given a moment to suspend our lack of belief in the world these characters live in. We are never given a chance to BEGIN to care for these people. This film could have been so much better at a longer running time if only they had taken some time to make every main character important to the audience FROM THE START.
Sure, about one-third the way through the movie, it is obvious as heck who the villain is, LONG before the hints at the character's true intentions, and far far from the time that character is revealed as the villain.
Yeah, there are some great moments, but most of them are topped off with a resolution that just plain sucks.
This will make a good Saturday-afternoon rental, but otherwise, I WANT MY MONEY BACK!
Disney, get a clue: Take these "quick flick" short movies and fill in the holes before you give it to an audience that has MUCH higher expectations. |
