 | I love the original, but there's a lot to say for this version, namely KURT RUSSELL. It's a good story with good acting and it's well-shot, but Kurt Russell's character is 100% believable, and in an effortless way.
It's a gory movie with a decent amount of suspense, and things kind of fall apart near the end, but by that time you're hooked into the Kurt Russell character. It's a grim story. I can't name another actor who could have brought so much to a story, it's really great casting. And incredible acting. Probably the only movie in my collection where the whole affair is really made whole and entertaining by one actor. He's that good in it. I mean, he's representing a hero defending the entire Earth against enemies from space. How much more heroic can it get..??? BUY THIS DVD NOW!!!
btw ***NOT*** for kids -- way too scary. |

 | a pioneering classic of horror and suspense that effectively defies and transcends every formula. This director is so powerful at making you believe that you are actually there. The accompanying behind the scenes documentary reveals the many ways in which this film remains a hallmark of horror. |

 | Director John Carpenter's favorite film as a kid was Howard Hawks "The Thing". After the success of Halloween, and The Fog, big studios wanted him. Universal studios gave him a ton of money to remake his favorite film, not only does he update it, he blows you away with visuals and fx that has never been seen at the time. Too bad this film was released the same time as the family oriented E.T., it would have done better, but that stupid candy eating creature had the whole world's attention. I am not knocking E.T., but this is an adult film, made to scare you to death. It delivers. The fx is incrdible, the then 22 year old Rob Bottin, (fx genious), is fantastic. The defibrillation scene is my personal best. UNBELIEVABLE STUFF. Kurt Russell plays his part to the best. Guessing who is and isn't infected keeps you on the edge of the seat. Ennio Morricone's score, (synthesizer), is brilliant and downright spooky. This is one creepy and eyepoping film, Carpenter is God in the Horror genre. Flip the lights off, grab a loved one and be prepared to be astonished, I was. |

 | Oh my God this has to be one of the greatest horror movies ever made. The music, the sets, and the grotesque aliens were to die for. I just watched this for the first time, and I am really impressed. I haven't seen a decent horror movie in a long time. I wish they could make horror movies like this again. To many of the movies now are not scary and so cliched. It is a mystery, science fiction, and horror all rolled into one. Anyways I definately recommend this. |

 | The Thing is very well made. No faults whatsoever. I rented this movie and watched it during nighttime. Definitly not one of my better ideas. I was scared out of my mind! This movie will keep your adrenaline pumping well after the end.
A group of American scientists' are conducting experiments in isolated Antartica. A couple miles away Norweigan scientists' are doing their own experiments. The Americans led by Mac (Kurt Russell) are startled when one of their own sled dogs' is chased by a Norwegian with a gun and is almost killed. The scientists are suspicious but continue on with normal activities. Then they trek over to the Norwegians' station and find an empty ice block, a huge spaceship stuck in the ice and a dead mutilated human and a burned human-like corpse. The scientists take the human-like corpse back with them and there it "wakes up" and disappears.
The scientists realize the horror of what this " thing " can do ( imitate humans and act and think just like that person) and now are trying to find out which of the scientists' are infected by this thing.
Puzzling twists, shocking truths, and pulse-pounding terror make this movie a must-see for any horror fan. Definitly see it during the day! |
