 | I feel like I've seen this movie too many times to give a decent review of it. Here the familiar Wyatt Earp story gets the 1950's Hollywood treatment. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas are Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, respectively. Jo Van Fleet plays Doc's girl and fifties starlet Rhonda Fleming plays Earp's love interest. The cast is filled with a host of familiar fifties faces: Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holliman, John Ireland, Lyle Bettger, Martin Milner, and Jack Elam. In a pre-Sar Trek role, De Forrest Kelly plays Morgan Earp. Dennis Hopper plays Billy Clanton as a juvenile delinquent, the sort of role he played in numerous fifties movies. Watching this movie is like spending time with a horde of old friends. The score by Frankie Laine, pre-Rawhide days, is one of the more memorable. In short, this movie is just the sort of thing if you're in the mood for a good olfd fashioned Western from the 1950's! |

 | The climax at the OK Corral is brilliantly done. Also, the film sticks enough to historical fact to be true. Hey Wyatt was sheriff in Dodge City just like he is here in this fim. And so on. Sure the dialogue is invented but that is true of all historical films. Or just about all of them |

 | I don't think this is regarded as an American classic, it's noticeable because it teamed two actors who played off each other quite well even though they only did about four or five movies together. The movie is longon being melodramatic, weak on script, and sometimes Burt and Kirk kind of over act their scenes. The whole story has very little to do with history, it's more hollywood and I do not think the guns or the costumes were really around for the period that this movie was dealing with. The real Doc Holiday and Wyat Erap might have been more grey chaarcters rather then heroic, and you have read a lot of books on the American West, then you will likely spot tons of historic inaccuracies left and right. It's for that reason and the others why I do not care for this movie. |
| Rating | | | Date | August 24, 2004 | | Summary | A glossy and shiny western. | Content
 | I enjoyed this movie, but I have to say that the costumes overpower the story a bit and are unrealistically glossy and fancy, at least by the standards of how western movies are shot today by the likes of Clint Eastwood. Everybody in this film is dressed to the teeth in silks and satins with no dust anywhere to be seen. This gives the movie a very phoney feeling about it, even though it is a good (and familiar) story and the acting is very strong. I think the music and soundtrack are very dated and annoying, with some songs more or less narrating the action as it is occuring on the screen! It struck me as very intrusive. |
| Rating | | | Date | August 07, 2004 | | Summary | A WESTERN THAT GETS BETTER EVERY MINUTE. | Content
 | The best thing in the Western "Gunfight At The O.K. Corral" is the quality of the performances of Kirk Douglas (as the self-destructive Doc Holliday) and Burt Lancaster (as the charismatic Wyatt Earp), both delivered one of the best performances of their careers. As the movie moves along, it gets more interesting, the story gets better, the situations are more exciting and the thrills grow.
"Gunfight At The O.K. Corral" is not one of the best Westerns in overall quality, but it is one of the best Westerns in the fun and entertainment categories. It's only weak point is the title song, which sounds old and silly compared with the music of other Westerns like "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" or "Once Upon A Time In The West". But putting that aside, is a very enjoyable movie. Recommendable for all the fans of the genre. |
