SummaryA First-Rate Western
Content
Led by an all-star cast, Silverado takes the viewer back in time to the classic wild west western, complete with barroom brawls, gunfights, stampedes, and wagon trains.

Emmett (Scott Glenn) has just been released from prison after serving five years for a "crime" committed in self-defense. While on his way to Silverado, he's attacked by a group of outlaws. He's unsure why he was attacked, but as time goes by, he realizes they were hired guns of Ethan McKendrick (Ray Baker). Ethan's father was the one Emmett killed in self-defense.

Soon, Emmett comes across Paden (Kevin Kline): a man left to die in the desert after being ambused by his own group of outlaws. After freeing Paden, the two ride to Turley to bust Emmett's kid brother Jake (Kevin Costner) out of jail. He has also killed in self-defense.

The last rider of the group is Mal (Danny Glover), a meat packer from Chicago who's heading back to Silverado to help his family out on their farm. During the course of the movie, Mal saves the group on several occasions.

Upon arriving in Silverado, the foursome finds out that the McKendrick clan has a firm grip on the town and have even instilled thier own sheriff, Cobb (Brian Dennehy), a former friend and riding companion of Paden. Emmett and Jake realize that the longer they stay in Silverado, the more danger they are getting into. What will happen between Paden and Cobb? Will Emmett and Jake make it to California safely?

This is a movie that has all of the elements of the classic western from the 50s and 60s. Loaded with gunfights, brawls, horses, and bad guys, this movie has everything that the western fan will enjoy. There's even a showdown on the main street at high noon! I give this movie my highest recommendation. Although I'm not a real big western fan, this movie really caught my attention, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Watch this great film and get a sense of what the wild west was really like.

SummaryThe Renaissance of the Western
Content
This is one of my favorite Westerns. Besides Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid most westerns before the mid-eighties had a tendency to be stoic and way too serious for my taste. (With the exception of "The Cheyenne Social Club" with Jimmy Stewart and Henry Fonda, it's a MUST SEE!!!) The entire star filled cast paints a rousing cinematic picture that is different from the earlier westerns. The little corrupt town of Silverado is shaken to it's weak foundation when people who are minding their own business are shoved too often and too hard. Our heroes rain down on Silverado like the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

Silverado has a light, exciting touch to it, mostly because of the 2 Kevins. Kevin Costner is not one of my favorite actors but his character is so hyper, unpredictable and barely under control in this movie you'd swear he was about to wet his pants. He was such a riot! Since he began acting this is in my opinion his most animated performance ever (Except when he played the corpse of the guy who killed himself in "The Big Chill" ) He and his antics light up the screen whenever he shows up. So he DOES have more than one dimension when it comes to acting....he just picks one-dimensional characters. Kevin Kline is always a treat to watch. The twinkle in his eye no matter what role he plays leaves a light touch in your heart. His character is endearing, witty and then serious when he needs to me.

The cast is huge with the Lawrence Kasden standbys of Danny Glover, Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner and Jeff Goldblum. There is also Scott Glenn, Brian Dennehy, John Cleese, Lynn Whitfield, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Hunt and Joe Seneca. With every scenario in a western you can think of paid tribute to, this movie single-handedly jumpstarted the return of the Western to the big screen and small screen for that matter. The formula was fresh and new and not stale at all like most of the predictable westerns before it. So pop some popcorn, get a huge soda crank up the surround sound and see it.

SummaryGreat Movie, Greatest Gunfights stink!
Content
I loved Silverado when it first came out and still do, but this crud that they packaged and pushed as the greatest gunfights is a 'bait and switch' tactic at best..... I wish I had read the review of that trailer before I had bought the DVD. There was no history of the cinematic western gunfight given at all...... Did they mention Shane? High Noon? Any John Wayne or Clint Eastwood movie? This clip was nothing more that self-promotion of recently or soon to be released DVD's by this same group. What I might have rated a 4 or 5, is only a 3 at best........

SummaryWell made western
Content
The Silverado of the title is a town where all the main characters in the movie eventually meet up. There isn't really an overriding plot to the story. More like lots of subplots that collide from time to time. Scott Glenn and Kevin Coster are brothers on their way to Silverado to see their sister before heading on to California. Glenn just happens to have spent time in prison for killing a member of the family that owns most of the land around the town. Along the way they meet Kevin Cline who ends up riding with them to Silverado. Along the way he meets up with Brian Dennehy, an old friend he used to ride with before going to jail. Somewhere in all this they meet Danny Glover who is on his way back to the family farm.

Silverado has a great cast that also includes Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese and Linda Hunt. The action is rousing and well choreographed. The movie is a little long and could have used a trim timewise and cleaning some of the subplots up would have helped, but overall this is a very good western, especially for being made at a time when westerns weren't made.

SummaryThe last great western
Content
Silverado is in my top ten for best westerns. This movie had everything from gunfights, a draw, tumbleweeds, fistfights, adventure, romance, and comedy. I do not know how they managed to make such a grand western back in the eighties. It took them a while for the two disc collectors edition but I think we are all glad it's finally here. This is in my opinion Keven Costerners first relatively good film. Lawrence Kasdan should have been called director of the year or something. You shold buy this movie just because it is one of the best movies I have seen. God bless you and have a great day
