SummaryPersonalities and conflict - our Constitution
Content
History is about people. So much of the educational system focuses on the facts (dry and meaningless without the context) and ignores the people involved, their character and quirks and interaction, their passions and conflicts. If you don't know the people behind our constitution you don't understand squat. If we had had different people doing this job we'd have had a vastly different country today.

I liked this when it came out in 1976 and bought it to get into a study of our constitution with my 13 year old. I particularly like the portrayal of John Adams and the song "For God Sakes John sit down."

As an Adams myself I can attest to a strain of tenacous hard headeness and the absolute confidence in what's right and wrong in most situations.

The modern relativism and wishy washy feely touchy society is foreign to me but it's the polluted waters we have to swim in.

John Adams had the same problems 250 years ago.

SummaryThe Eagle hatches
Content
This film, adapted from the play of the same name treats the birth of the nation with music while maintaining the serious tone of the times. The songs are uplifting; the "conversations" between John Adams and his wife are poignant. This is highly recommended for history buffs as well as fans of musical comedy.

Summarya fun, fun musical!
Content
having seen the actor who plays Ben Franklin in more sinister roles, it was fun to watch him having fun...John Adams, played by the talented actor who was 1 of the hospital chiefs on St. Elsewhere, makes me laugh with his biting commentary on the members of the continental congress...all in all a delightful film!

Having seen both a stage play and the full length video, I felt this version was a bit watered down with some color and sound
mediocrity.

This film has been a family favorite for years. We see it almost every July 4th. It is, of all things, a musical comedy dealing with revolutionary history, and it is quite historically accurate, according to my mother, a revolutionary history buff. The family agrees it would be a great film to show in primary and secondary American History classes because it contains such good history and delightful characterizations and is so entertaining it would keep students' attention and attach to their memories. The songs, alas, are not terribly sing-able, so they haven't made the pop charts, but they suit the musical and do not intrude on the story line.
