The Scorpion Queen

Background:

“I’ve managed to keep my clothes on for everything I've done so far.” Kelly Hu

A gorgeous Asian-American celebrity, Kelly Hu captured attention with her performance in The Scorpion King (2002), as the eye-refreshing Cassandra, opposite WWF star The Rock. Her next performance as Deathstrike in X2 (2003) brought her a MTV Movie Award.

Initially guest-starring in the TV series “Growing Pains” (1985), Hu caught public attention through the series “Nash Bridges” (1997-1998), as Inspector Michelle Chan, and “Martial Law” (1998), in which she starred as Grace Chen.

Aside from acting, and one of Maxim’s “Hot 100,” Hu also established a name for herself in the modeling world. A former Miss Teen USA 1985 and runner up in Miss USA 1993, she modeled in Vidal Sassoon and Mary Kay Cosmetic commercials.

As for her private life, Hu was previously known to have a romantic relationship with Ahmad Ali Moussaui, an investment banker. The Hawaiian girl is now dating a talent manager, Gordon Gilbertson, with whom she co-owns a restaurant, Basic Bites. The couple is currently living in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California.

Childhood and Family:

Kelly Ann Hu was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 13, 1967. She is the daughter of Herbert, a salesman and exotic bird feeder, and Juanita, a draftswoman for the city of Honolulu. Kelly’s parents divorced when she was 6 years old and her mother later married Roy Takara. Kelly is also the cousin of playwright Jenelle Riley. Kelly’s older brother Glenn (later became a U.S army captain) was her first martial arts guru before she earned a brown belt in karate. Kelly, a blend of Chinese, English and Hawaiian lineage, enrolled in The Kamehameha High School in Honolulu, a school exclusively established for Hawaiian youths. While studying there, she decided to join the local Miss Teen USA pageant.

Career:

At 16, Hu participated in the Miss Teen Hawaii pageant based on a friend’s suggestion to use the contest as a stepping-stone toward Hu’s goal in becoming a model. She was crowned Miss Teen USA in 1985. She later modeled in commercials for Vidal Sassoon, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Jack in the Box, Clothestime, Bud Light, Ricoh Cameras, Thrifty Rental, Ivory Soap, and Dole Pineapple.

After moving to Los Angeles, Hu made her acting debut by guest starring in an episode of the popular sitcom, “Growing Pains” (1987), as Mike Seaver’s (Kirk Cameron) love interest. She was then seen in “Night Court” (1988), “Tour of Duty” (1989) and “21 Jump Street” (1989). She moved on to the silver screen as the victim of Jason Krueger in Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989), the wife of musician Ray Manzarek (Kyle MacLachlan) in Oliver Stone's The Doors (1991) and played a role in Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991) and Surf Ninjas (1993). In between her screen performances, Hu joined the Miss USA pageant in 1993 and received the award of Miss Photogenic in addition to being one of The Top 6 Finalists. She then returned to the small screen with guest roles in series like “Melrose Place” (1994), “Renegade” (1994), “Pacific Blue” (1996), “Sunset Beach” (1997) and “Malcolm and Eddie” (1998).

It was her performance in the TV series “Nash Bridges” (1997-1998), playing Inspector Michelle Chan, and “Martial Law” (1998-2000), playing Grace Chen, that raised her popularity. Her beauty and talent gained even more recognition when she was cast in the starring role of Cassandra, opposite WWF idol The Rock, in The Scorpion King (2002), and co-starred as Sona, alongside Jet Li, in Cradle 2 the Grave (2003). She was nominated for Best Fight at The MTV Movie Awards for her performance with Hugh Jackman in X2 (2003).

After a recurring role in the TV series “Threat Matrix” (2004), Hu guest-starred as Detective Kaila Maka in the series “CSI: NY” (2005-2006) and was also seen on the big screen as Lisa Brooks in Underclassman (2005). Recently, she took part in Americanese (2006), in which she played Brenda Nishitani, and will soon appear in the upcoming Shanghai Kiss (2006), The Devil's Den (2006), Succubus: Hell Bent (2006), The Air I Breathe (2006) and Expats (2007).
